I've read about a million different postings on protein supplements and shakes. But no one really says what kind of protein to take. So is Whey protein better or is Soy. I'm trying to gain some size does that matter?

Whey is more beneficial for weight trainees trying to supply correct nutrient density to their hard working muscles. It is quickly absorbed, so great for pre and post workout, and the amino acid profile is much better for muscle feeding. Soy has some other benefits, but generally whey, and even better a blended whey( eggwhites, casien, hydrolosates and isolates) are a best choice for throughout the day.-------------- The one goal you will NEVER achieve is the one you never attempt. |

I defiantely agree with bb1, whey is by far superior to soy in just about every aspect.

Milk protein (from which whey is derived) gives about 82% net protein utilization (though whey is purified so higher depending on the product); soybean flour is about 61%. So gram for gram you get between one and two third more protein for muscle growth from taking whey.
I however use soy protein this is for several reasons. Firstly I already consume a lot of (goats) milk in my diet so like the variation. There is some (though not conclusive at my last check) evidence linking soy protein to lowering cholesterol. I have found a good tasting and inexpensive brand (something I’ve not yet done with whey). And finally I get mild eczema which (as with most other sufferers) is linked to a allergy to protein in cows milk and I am not sure if the whey powder is broken down sufficiently to stop this reaction occurring. PS Naturally (whole) egg protein is about 94% and used as the basis for protein ratings (and so defined as 100), but then you get into the whole question of eating the whole egg or not (better on the protein, vitamins and minerals side and but the yoke contains most fat and cholesterol) and you open a whole new can of worms. |

oxdp954... this is a great site man. In just a few minutes of reading the article...this guy has debunked watever ive learnt abt the facts abt whey!! Really kinda scary bcoz all this while, through the reading ive done, EVERYONE has touted that whey is by far the more superior protein...with a better amino acid profile blah blah. Now this person comes along and throws it out to the drain.
Would love to hear anymore opinions from the rest |

The article looks more like a sales pitch, and all of the studies listed are really outdated. This article is just that, old and outdated research and one guys opinion.

Okay. One very positive benefit of soy is that it aids in women upping there estrogen levels. Now, I don't know about you, but I won't even consider a product that could have the potential of raising estrogen levels. This equals water retention(which is why women suffer from this more then men USUALLY) and other unsightly problems. Whey has been proven time and time again to be a very healthy source of protein and has all of the same benefits of soy. Don't forget that whey is simply a derivitive of milk, so obviously your going to get calcium and SOME of the other positive benefits of milk. If you are worried about your heart, then simply keep your saturated fat intake to a minimum. Don't let what one guy says in an article totally debunk what you thought about Whey, you need to be more critical than that, because for every article like this that dog Whey, there are tons more that put Whey in the #1 spot. In fact, egg protein is a better source than soy as well as chicken, beef and turkey and tuna. So you see, soy is really nothing to jump for joy over. With my own knowledge and experience, I know that I will not include soy in my diet now or ever, simply no reason to, but if you want to, then that is your choice to make, just make sure you know ALL of the facts. Hope I cleared this up a little.

thanks for the advice...guess ill take to most articles with a pinch of salt henceforth but it sounds like ur aversion to soy is pretty high ...im an asian and asians consume lots and lots of soy products...for over many years now...so far to my knowledge ive not seen any chinese men growing breasts or becoming more effeminate bcoz of soy....
another thought came to my mind to as i read ur msg...wat abt bodybuilders who are vegetarians? dun they derive their main source of protein from soy? yet they seem to be in tip top shape if not better... juz my 2 cents worth...really appreciate the clearing up tho:) |

The guy is a Zoologist and one of only 5 chosen by the Royal society of England for funding. he has some good credentials. Is a little off topic but it is interesting to c the truth about milk and dairy products. |
