My dad just picked up the recent issue of Men's Health magazine and right in the cover in big bold letters is written TURN FAT INTO MUSCLE, i believe this magazine and others like it are giving people a misconception on how to exercise and diet properly. Everyone wants results NOW and magazines like this promises immediate results and poposterous(sp?) ideas like turning your fat into rock hard muscle. Not to mention every issue is about the same damn thing bigger biceps and getting that six pack in just a few minutes a day. Although i do keep in mind that magzines like theses ones might help beginners and they will probably see quick results but beginners will see results no matter what program they do. I just had to rant, i just got sick of it the other day.

It sounds soooo easy! And I must add, JustinE22, I am tired of the "new" commercials for weight loss - it was bad enough the old ones always were full of fit, I-doubt-ever-been-fat individuals sashying around in their bikini's and thongs telling us we could "look like this" if we bought their product (and their bull)! Even the new Bo-Flex commercial shows the teacher guy that lost all that weight carrying some beautiful, thin model out of the swimming pool, like he could get all the babes now! NOW, they have these serious talk commercials, little heart-to-hearts trying to get us to believe that we can take a little pill and wala! There goes the fat, the big secret we have been waiting for! Here are some serious individuals (all pretty thin, too, come to think of it!) telling us the struggle is nearly over, just spend $125 and you will be in heaven! I especially dislike the one that says overweight people are in the miserable group and those that used their product are now no longer in that group!
Gimme a break - each product says "with exercise and healthy diet" it will work - HEY, all, save the money and buy some healthy food and some weights instead and you will get the same results minus the pill! There...off my soapbox! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Mens Health and Fitness normally has good tips and advice. The cover in big letters of TURN FAT INTO MUSCLE is advertising. It's how they grab peoples attention in order to sell the magazine. If you read the article, it tells you that you can't really turn fat into muscle, and then goes into lifting and cardio yada yada yada(the stuff WE already know) For guys like my husband who think about lifting but don't very often, it is a deffinate attention getter and motivator to move their butts.

Like i said i do see how it could help people who have never worked out before but there's still more BS in those magazine than what is actually right. No one would continue to buy them if they told the truth about how long it takes to get the body you want, were just not that kind of society we want things NOW! I swear every muscle magzine has something every week on how to get bigger biceps never mentioning that genetics will play the biggest role in how big, fast, and high your bicep will be. |

All those mags are there for one reason - to sell the products advertised in them. if you buy enough of them they can be used as weights. Bundle them together in two stacks and lift.-------------- I will get to it as soon as I am done lifting. |

Mens health has terrible articles...nothing backed with research and science. Read this stuff with a grain of salt.
They cater to the more "out of shape" men, and if they who did nothing before do what they propose, of course they will lose weight or gain muscle. as far as the commercials for products, remember, no matter what the name of the diet, whant product(bowflex for example or 6 second abs), or what supplement, the end result is that you are creating a caloric deficit in some way to lose fat. The diets eliminate something(in other words less calorie intake), the products produce a caloric deficit if you use it(by burning calories), and the supplements say with a sound diet and exercise(which will create your caloric deficit.) Don't be fooled by any of this stuff, by being here you are smart enough to know the real SECRET of fat loss or muscle gain.:dumbbell::big_smile::big_smile: -------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

What annoys me is all the misleading advertisements for diets and supplements make people very hesitant to do anything. If it were not for some good vitamins/supplements I found, I would NEVER have filled some of my nutritional gaps and got the initial energy boost I needed to WANT to stick to a program. Now, after losing 30 pounds of fat, I bought a home gym and free weights and have been working out 5-6 days per week for the last 3 months. I have put on muscle, lost fat, and feel better than I did as a teen. It is amazing how RESULTS can be a motivator, at least for me.
Don't believe any of the ads you read in those magazines. Find friends/family/people that have achieved RESULTS and ask them to show you WHAT they did and WHY it worked compared to other things. It amazes me that people will buy a Dr. Phil book on weight loss, with a picture of him on the cover, and think he has the secret to getting fit. I started the program that helped me because I saw friends getting RESULTS. Now with my RESULTS, I have helped lots of friends/family get on the right track woth thier goals. Don't give up! There are programs that work, and most of them are not on TV or radio. Take this website for example, it works! Nutrition Works! nspilbor@sc.rr.com |

I saw one that pissed me off the other day... right there in big words on the cover... "new discovery; Stretching can actually decrease strength" so I read the article and it said if you stretch before lifting weights it will cause you to be weaker and not lift as much, therefore not getting good results... what a load of crap...-------------- My mind tells me to win, my spirit shows me how, and my body delivers. |

Sadly a lot of people don't want to hear the truth. They want to be told it's easy to lose weight in minutes and be able to eat all the garbage they want :(
A magazine touting the truth just wouldn't sell. -------------- Damselfly Quit being a sheep, they only get led to slaughter |

PureSnowChic...stretching actually does decrease your strength in an exercise...it's a fact...
yes teh supplement industry makes a lot fo money on ignorance...but so do many other industries...it's a fact of life...gotta learn how to play the game sort of to speak...I personally find lots of useful advice in those magazines despite the fluff which they add on top of that....just gotta learn how to discern fluff from the real deal.. |
