Can anybody tell me what the name brands of protein shakes are? I was wondering if I can go to like Pick 'N Save and buy one or do I have to order one off the internet.

Do a search under the Supplements forum and do your homework! Try looking at Netrition.com for your supplement needs.

Good luck!

The internet definitely gives you great deals, but if you can't go that route, Osco Drug and Walmart have a few different brands, although not the high quality kind recommended here.

Shakes are different. There should be some directions with the product.. hopefully. I have "meal replacement" shakes which I have throughout the day.. but I also have shakes which are intended as a post-workout suppliment.

Oh dude1202.. personally I use Myoplex currently. (though I know it's not the best really) -but it tastes relativly good. Isopsure seems to be a good product, and MetRx makes a decent shake.

AST's VP2 is an extremely good product. It was reccomended by someone (bb1fit) on F/T and I gave it a shot. It is 100% whey protein with none of the other BS that other crap brands use. I started out taking it only after a workout (3days/wk); now I just started taking it everyday 2x's a day. The chocolate tastes very good too; not just saying that, sometimes I actually crave the taste. It's even good mixed with water. My results when taking it only after workouts were phenominal! I put on about 20lbs of lean muscle. from March-August. Keep in mind I was 150lbs when I started.

And nope this isn't and infomercial or advertisement :) I just support the product!

Make sure with pure whey that other than post workout, mix it with something to slow down digestion. Fast digestion is both the good and the bad of pure whey.

If you want bottom line no bull prices, and mix your own, or even have them custom mix a protein for you, here is a great place. The website is clunky, but they are fixing that next month. Just click on proteins, and it will list them for you, the types, what they have in them, etc. http://www.proteincustomizer.com. If you want to buy a comercially made one, then as mentioned, VP2 is a good one as is Muscle Provider by Beverly.

What would be something to mix it with on an off day? Would taking the shake as a drink with lunch slow the digestion?

There are many things, if you can handle it in your diet for example, on a gain, heavy cream, 2 tbsp. is great. Plus the taste is awesome. Natural peanut butter is great, and mixed with the chocolate, tastes like a Reese Cup. Mix it with milk, or if dieting, use a tbsp. of flax oil.

Flax oil will slow down digestion. Whey digests very rapidly, and flax will slow it down. Never take whey on an empty stomach other than post workout with some simple sugars. It will never make it out of the gut, and at best will be utilized for energy and not muscle building.

As far as for weight loss, it is your total caloric intake in reference to output that matters here, not so much what type of protein you use. Although, whey is much better for building muscle, and muscle is your best friend in burning fat.

The protein from boild eggs aren't changed. Of course, dicard the yolks, or have 1 yolk for every 4 eggs.

What about first thing in the morning bb1, isn't that when you need whey protein since you haven't had it all night.

You are correct, if you do not have nightime meals, then some whey with your breakfast is a good idea. Your object here is to reverse catabolism from the nightime fasting. Now, if you are dieting(trying to lose fat), have it with low glycemic foods, as not to disturb the fat burning process. You will have your insulin spike post workout. If you are trying to gain, then feel free to add a bit of simple carbs here to help replenish glycogen.
