Walk, Walk, Walk!!

I got up this morning and went for a 27 minute walk. I didn't get to yesterday due to rain, so I did it this morning. Is there some kind of a pre-walk stretch that I can do to prevent my shins from murdering me half way through my walk? I do feel a ton better when I get my walk in early. I hope I can keep with it. I have a long ways to go to get to my goal.

Thank you for the tips on this as well. I worry a little about going on my walk, thinking what if I get half way through and then I can't continue. I would be stuck on the sidewalk blocks away from my house. lol. How embarassing.

Shin splints ~ ouch!!! I know they are a pain (pardon the pun). But there is hope, as you progress in your fitness they will subside. But you want relief now, I get that. When I started running I would get them all the time, here is what I learned. First thing be sure you are wearing the proper foot ware. Even just walking you want to make sure your shoes give you proper support. If you are unsure, try to go to a running specialty store and get fitted for proper shoes. To alleviate current pain, be sure to ice your shins after exercise. If it hurts to much to walk consider biking for a day or two in lieu of walking. Be sure to stretch well before and after your activity. Stretches before activity will help (specifically various calf stretches), but you shouldn't stretch cold muscles, so consider running/marching in place before your walk, or start off at a modest pace, stop 5 minutes in, stretch, then continue your walking at your active pace. Hope this is helpful!
