I've gotten to the point where I'm pretty much living off of just chicken breast, tuna, and eggs. And it's great because I'm seeing good changes. But I've really had cravings for peanut butter and jelly lately. I know that peanut butter isn't that bad, but what about jelly? Grape, in this case.
In a semi-related question, does toasting bread change it's nutritional value? For the record, I'm not trying to cut body fat; I'm on a progressive gains plan. |

Toasting bread takes soem of the fat out of it.
As for your pb&j have it on one of your cheat days, or early in the day so you can burn it off. Try the sugar free jams/jellies. -------------- We must become the change we want to see. Ivan Montreal Canada |

Go for the natural pb, loaded with healthy fats, and if you want a healthier jelly, I know smuckers makes reduced sugar versions. Just make sure you know a serving size. I know from my nutrition class that toasting bread does actually change it's nutritional value. It carmalizes the bread so to speak and creates a little more sugar, how much? I am honestly not to sure, I wouldn't worry about it to much if eaten in moderation. and you are eating the right kind (100% unbleached whole wheat). Hope this helps.

natural peanut butter is awesome! as well as all fruit, im sure if you make that on some all grain bread a few times a week with a few sprinkles of protein powder it would be fine!

I'm a huge lover of peanut butter and jelly sammiches with a big glass of milk. I use all natural peanut butter and smuckers sugar free jelly. I just wish that bread wasn't so bad. LOL!-------------- ~Jennifer http://www.gwindalyn.com |

I am a peanut butter lover! I actually also crave peanut butter when on a comp diet. My favorite is Natural peanut butter, toast some whole grain bread, spread the peanut butter on while toast is hot so it melts a bit, and sprinkle on my favorite chocolate protein powder. Like a reese cup to me almost! Natural peanut butter fats are mostly good for you. Do not be afraid of it. Just only do it to satisfy your cravings and keep your "sanity". Smuckers makes a good one, it will have the oil on top. Ingredients are....peanuts, salt. Most health food stores have different ones, the almond butter is also excellent. Has other health benefits.-------------- The one goal you will NEVER achieve is the one you never attempt. |

What I also do sometimes is I have natural peanut butter on 12 grain bread with slices of banana instead of the jelly. I know it sounds weird, but it tastes really good. Other times I just go full on out for the jelly. Since I am not going out for competition or anything, it helps me keep motivated to give in to a craving like that rather than splurge on half a pizza or something that's way worse. Crazy, I haven't had pizza in over four months....

I read somewhere that people trying to watch their carbs should have their bread sliced at the store on a lower setting so that the slices are thinner. Sounds good to me. I eat the bread with 14 grains, and it's actually pretty good for you. Wonder bread is evil! Try mashing up strawberries instead of using jelly, or go to the health food store and by diabetic fruit spread.-------------- Think you can or think you can't; either way you're right--Goethe |

I can vouch for peanut butter and banana. Also, for cheat days, peanut butter and honey is good and believe it or not - peanut butter and bacon. Yes, yes, it sounds terrible, but it's darn good!-------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

Peanut butter and honey I've done.
Bacon!? Hmm. Methinks you are insane mister! LOL! When really little my brother and I used to eat peanut butter on hotdogs. Talk about nasty! LOL! The things kids will eat... -------------- ~Jennifer http://www.gwindalyn.com |

Instead of drenching pancakes in butter and syrup, peanut butter is excellent to spread on top!!

Elvis fried his PB and banana sammies in a whole stick of butter (ralf!).
Try peanut butter on apple slices if you don't want the bread carbs, or peanut butter and celery sticks. But if it is PB&J sandwiches you are craving you are better off just having one on your cheat day or you will probably eat a bunch of other things to try and substitute for it and actually end up having eaten more carbs/calories than if you had just had what you wanted in the first place. -------------- Challenge + Consistency = Results |

I've been known to eat the Non-fat cottage cheese the same way. Maybe I'm just weird, but I like it that way. As for talking to my food.................I'd try it if I could convince it to take up less space in my stomach. Why is it so hard to eat? I thought eating healthy would be easy. As for cheat days..........How often do you guys have a cheat day? I think I've been cheating myself out of cheat days.

so I just bought all natural peanut butter with sugar free jelly (5g Carbs) along with 100% whole grain bread. Am I missing something, this seems like it would be a perfectly healthy snack or meal?

Can't stand peanut butter...but for jam....there are triple fruit fruit spreads which are essentially pureed fruit (raspberry is the best)

I'm so spoiled - my roommate's mom makes jam. We always have homemade raspberry jam in the fridge :) Soooo good.

I laughed when I saw this post. Just last week I was craving pb and j sooo bad, I hadn't had one in about eight months, this from a person who used to eat it every day. I broke down and had one and it was the best sandwich I had in my life. I have learned to give in to cravings once in a while, it keeps me from going crazy.

I warm a La Tortilla Factory low carb tortilla and spread some PB & J and put banana slices and a sprinkling of some high fiber cereal or granola or wheat germ and heat it up for about 30 seconds and cut it like a pizza :)
