Supplements can be a great aid with your health and fitness goals. Combined with the proper exercise and nutritional plan they can be quite effective.

Ok, I have never taken protein supplements (or any other supplements for that matter), and I have no clue on how to take them. Is one supposed to substitute a meal with a protein shake or drink it with a meal or what?

Really need to know more about you and your goals - profile would be very helpful.

I found eating 5-6 meals a day - 2 of which are protein meal replacement shakes - combined with increased water intake and dedicated exercise helped me lose excess fat and add muscle mass. I buy whatever is on sale and doesn't taste too bad - very subjective.

I'm personally trying to rid myself of that small layer of fat around the gut while building up my upper body (which greatly needs it). Though I was under the impression that it was a good idea to lessen the intake of food to loose that fat weight.

Protein should be taken either before or after your workout. I like to take mine right after. You can also use it as a snack, I really wouldn't recommend replacing a meal with it. You still need your other sources of vitamins and minerals.
