When should I take my suppliments?

I've been working out consistantly for the past 2 1/2 years and I'm happy with my body, but I feel its time to up the training a bit and try a protein supplement. I've been taking creatine for about 6 monthes now. I take 1 serving befor a work out and 1 after.

My question is this, when should I take my protein suppliment. I've heard all kinds of things like take 1 serving when I wake up and 1 after I work out. I've heard take 1 befor my work out and 1 after. Is there really a good time to take my protein shakes or is it just kind when ever I want?

I'm taking soy protein. I get alot of protein from skim milk and yogurt so I thought I should try and get a good variety of protein in my diet. Is this a good idea or I'm I being foolish?

Depending how many protein shakes you have in one day, make sure you have one within 45 min of your workout.
The others can be at any time, even b4 going to sleep.

If you are trying to get a variety of proteins as you state, a better option than soy would be to get a "blended" protein. One that contains whey isolate, whey concentrate, eggwhite, casaein, hydrolosates, ana a bit of soy. This would give you a great blended protein for your daily shakes. For immediately pre and post workout, it is beneficial to go with a more pure whey, due to its fast absorbtion rate. The only reason you need protein shakes in the first place is if you have a hard time eating enough protein to meet your daily requirements, or just for a change from chicken breast. Other than your whey shakes pre and post training, these I would recommend completely for quicker recovery.

Thanks for the info! I'll start on a blended protein next month, when my current protein supply runs out. Thanks again guys.

Thank you very much for your help. I will go purchase some Blended protein today. But now I've got 2 more questions. 1) is soy protein absorbed slower then whey? if so do we know why? 2) what is a name of a good blended protein?
