I have just started using my treadmill again after a long hiatis. I've noticed that my toenails feel almost bruised. I have been wearing an older pair of tennies, could this be the prob? Also, what can I do to prevent further soreness?

Shoes are very important, if they are tight around your toes that could be causeing the bruises.

I used to get this too when I ran. Got a new pair of trainers which I got from a specialist shop and they fitted a lot better. There wasn't so much room for my toes to get jammed.
No more sore tootsies!

What about your nails? Maybe they simply need a cut?!!

This is called "black-toe" , your toes are being bruised and overheated, it will actualy cause your toe nails black and fall off. Sometimes it will cause you to get "club toes" too. I have had this from time to time. The only cure is to change to a better running shoe. Lots of runners get this especialy when running in the plus 12 miles a week or more distance. You need to get running type shoes. You need to find shoes that have a larger "toe box".
NIKE is a good choice for this. Also the brooks adrenaline GTS is a very good choice. A "General Rule of thumb" expect to spend at least $70 bucks for a good pair of running shoes. Anything under that is a super good deal or just cheap crap.
