Hey guys. I'm new around here. I'm a 17 year old army reservist and I'm looking to get myself into shape for this summers training. Just a couple of stats: 6'1, 200 lbs (I was 220, but I'm down 20 in the last month and a half), in decent physical shape. What I'm looking for most is cardio and endurance.

My question: When I'm training for cardio, is it best to run a shorter distance at a higher speed, or keep the speed down and the time up?

Thanks for your help

Hi and welcome to FT. If I was going for cardio and endurance I would start slow, say 4 miles at a slow speed and try to increased both as each day goes by. PS please take some time and fill out your profile.

Hey. I've been through everything you're about to do this summer, so I'll give you a heads up as to what you should expect. You're going to do a lot of running and twice as many push-ups. What they had us doing was a lot of Indian Sprints, Frog Leaps (whatever you want to call them) - you would form a single-file line, run at a medium to slow pace, and the last man in line would sprint to the front of the line. You keep doing that (last man sprinting to the front) until your Drill Sgt decides you've run enough. That was to help you build up endurance and give your heart a good workout. We also did a lot of running in formation (all soldiers in step singing cadence). That was to help you remember to breath while running. There's a bunch of other stuff you're going to do, but you will be put into a run group that you're able to keep up with. So I guess what I'm trying to say (in a very long-winded fashion) is to include sprints with your slow runs. That should get you prepared for Basic Training.

Chris: I've already taken my basic, but due to circumstance, I didn't get a trade course. This summers lineup is going to be a 4 week Soldier Qualification (Which I assume will be mostly running, pushups, and digging *ugh*) and my Trade training for Supply Tech, which will probably (Probably?? lol) be just morning PT and then alot of desk stuff.

Yeah. Unfortunately, my eyes don't allow me into any other trades that my unit needs. As soon as I can, i'm getting them lasered and going combat arms. As soon as I can being...probably 6 years :(

Sometimes it sucks being 17, eh?

lol
