Hi there...first of all i juz like to say, after being a member for a couple of months, that this is indeed an awesome site! Ive been reading the msg boards ( tho not participating that much) everyday and well i guess its time for me to ask my 2 cents worth:)
I play squash a lot and also lift weights quite often ( 3 times a week) The thing is bcoz of the nature of squash, there is a lot of stress on the joints esp the knee and elbow joints. So my question is do i need glucasamine and chondroitin ? Im only 22 yrs...so im not sure whether it is really neccessary to start on these supplements ?

This supplement is meant to maintain and apparently repair damaged "connective tissue." Cartilage, ligaments, etc, and it gives relief to "most" people who have arthritic joint problems.

I don't think you need it. I have had two knee surgeries and a back surgery, with knee cartilage, ligament, and arthritic problems in the knee. I've taken it for a few months now, and I like the results. I feel more flexible in general and I feel less irritation in my knee, especially on "leg" day at the gym. It's working for me, but it doesn't work for everybody, and I don't think it's meant to be taken as a preventative measure for a healthy young person.

It's also something you have to take for a long time, 30+ days, to even feel a difference if it's going to work for you. I recommend not taking anything for a medical condition that you think might arise from activity...just wait until a problem arises before you address it. Good healthy diet and stretching should keep you good, as well as stabilizer muscle work around your knees and elbows. One of the best exercises I've heard of for tennis-type sports which allow for more stress on ankles and knees and quick change of direction are walking lunges.

Good luck ;)

I am only 21 and I take a glucosamine sulfate product. At any age, when you place stresses on your body (Heavy weight training, sports), you need to protect yourself. I look at it as an insurance policy. Glucosamine has been proven in published scientific studies, so, there is real hard proof behind it.

You better prevent than cure......
I've taken supps for my joints every single day for almost 2 years now.
Chondroitine and glucosamine got nothing dangerous in them so don't worry. The only thing you need to know is that it takes around 4 weeks before you'll start feeling the benefits from the supps. Good luck!

What was in my mind when i posted this msg was like wat dahayz said " an insurance policy" . I wanted to protect my self before it was too late.... dun want to end up with a worn off knee cap by the time im 30 yrs and would have to stop playing sports or even stop goin to the gym ( god forbid that lol! :)
In terms of diet and stretching, I think im pretty ok in that area...question is whether is it enough?
thanks for the info!

I take it but I am 49 years old. I noticed pain in my elbow and shoulders a year ago and tried it. It really worked for me. I am not an expert on herbs so try your local health food store and ask someone knowledgeable in this.
