Now the media is hyping the dangers of carbohydrates as why we are fat! Earlier it was eat all the carbs you want! Then there was of course the no fat diet! Folks, I have been preaching one simple task toward dieting that works over and over and is time tested and will always work! It is more calories in than expended, weight gain, less calories in than expended over time, weight loss! Simple mathematics. To lose weight, should you focus on calories or carbs?
If you’re looking for sound reasons to join (or not to join) the low-carb diet craze, you won’t find them—yet. The authors of a new review published in the Journal of the American Medical Association set out to investigate the safety and efficacy of low-carb, high-protein weight-loss plans, such as the popular Atkins diet (2003, vol. 289, no. 14). The Stanford and Yale University researchers concluded that insufficient evidence is available to support a recommendation for or against low-carb diets.
The researchers performed a systematic review of 107 studies on 94 types of low-carb diets published between 1966 and 2003. The findings suggest that weight loss was associated not with decreased carbohydrate intake, but with eating fewer calories for a longer period of time. Of the 663 participants who took in less than 60 grams of carbohydrates per day, only 71 took in less than 20 grams of carbohydrates each day, so few were on an extremely low-carb diet. A typical low-carb plan, such as Atkins, recommends you begin at 20 grams of carbohydrates per day for at least two weeks, or until you achieve your weight-loss goals. Then you can gradually increase carbohydrate intake, as long as you maintain your desired weight. Most of the diets studied were short-term (only five lasted longer than 90 days) and no study evaluated the effects of low-carb eating on older dieters, so the researchers found insufficient evidence to recommend or reject such diets, especially in the long-term and for people over age 50. –Bryce Edmonds

Best to stick with tried and true until something is scientifically, irrevocably proven....at least in my opinion :o)

That's why I try to only listen to you, glad that I have you to guide me because it was that kind of media hype that was guiding me before you.

I for one feel that if God made it , it is good for you. It is the way we prepare our food, the portions we eat coupled with horrible lifestyles that makes us fat and out of shape. I am with Carivan. I eat what I need and keep a journal to see what worked and how I felt after. Some weeks I need more carbs, Other weeks more veggies or protein.

Unfortunately the middle of the road approach doesn't stir up enough interest. Hell, if they told us the right approaches up front, what would we need them for??
