Ok, I am in a mood tonight, I know this is a fitness board, but this is a different question for us 40 and overs. Music..... who was the best guitarist ever!! I will start.....Jimi Hendrix was a God!!!!-------------- As far as genetics go, the skies the limit. You are limited only by your mental perception of it. Ron |

I'm only 25, but I have to agree with you. Jimi had sounds that can and will never be reproduced.-------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" "Pain is only weakness leaving the body." "Never think of how weak you are; think of how strong you're going to be." |

After I posted last night I also thought of B.B. King. Amazing stuff from him, too.
The problem with narrowing down who the the best of all time is/was is that all of the mentioned guitarists have their own style and genre. -------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" Yeah, it is a tough one. I have also to throw in there Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Then there is Carlos Santana, Alvin Lee(Ten Years After) was pretty damn good, as you say tons, but, clearly, Hendrix is still the man....has anyone been to Cleveland, seen the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? They had a Jimi room going on, films of him playing and stuff, I could have spent my entire day in there!-------------- As far as genetics go, the skies the limit. Agreed. Jimi is the man. I often wonder what he would have been playing if he were still alive. However Jeff Beck and Alvin Lee would also be high on my list. Do you play, Ron? Because those are choices often made by musicians. Here is another, more obscure name in the mix. Remember Tommy Bolin?

Hey, let's not forget Zappa! Just listen to his live stuff...mesmerizing. Then there are the "technicians"(what, no Vai or Satriani fans? I know...no soul, right?). Oh, and Eric Johnson. There are just too many to count, so that leads me back to Jimi.

Yeah, Tommy Bolin did one great song, can't remember the name of it. For some reason I want to think something like trex or something. Zappa was also great, most people think of him as doing the nutty stuff with the Mothers, but the guy could really play. And Joe Satriani, and how about Leo Kotke. Geez, got me trying to think of the greatest guitar solos now, can't think of one. Drum solo's come to mind...Toad by early Cream...-------------- As far as genetics go, the skies the limit. Andre Segovia - every artist listed would bow to this true master of the guitar - and he doesn't need electricity.

I'll give you Andre
My picks: Classical - Andre Segovia Electric Blues - Jimi Accoustic Blues - Big Bill Bronzy Rock - Jimmy Page Classical Based Metal - Randy Rhoads Blues Based Rock - Eddie Van Halen (can't believe he wasn't mentioned) Speed Metal - Via/Malmstein (this one's too close to call) Jazz - Django Rheinhardt (the guy played with only two usable fingers on his left hand!) I really think you have to look at it by genra. To me the great ones are those who did something completely different, inovators. Or at least combined different things to make something new. Great post Ron! It's good to kick back and relax every once in awhile. |

The 'genre' point is valid, except there is some cross-over with certain artists, and that is when you can make some interesting comparisons. Jimi played a wide variety of styles, so he gets the nod, not necessarily for technical skills, but for inovation, soul, and vision. Of course, everyone has to bow to Andres, but I thought we were only considering popular music. BTW, Tommy Bolin was a relatively unknown replacement guitarist. He replaced Joe Walsh in the James Gang, and Richie Blackmore in Deep Purple. I believe you are thinking of Marc Bolan of T-rex, BB1. I did forget about Django...did you ever hear his live stuff with Mark Knopfler? Amazing!

I must say Eric Clapton was the greatest of all time. Not so much for the technique side, but for pure versatility; he doesn't just just play one or two styles. For the 40 plus years that man has been in our ears, he has played blues, country, acid, rock, jazz, etc., etc., and has been (and still is) at the top for each one. -------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

Hey, nice to hear from you Rev...wondering where you have been. You are so right about Eric, of course he was one of the first ones I thought of, and was great and still is, just for some reason never has been one of my favs except in the old days with Cream.
As far as Tommy Bolin goes, yes you are right hangclaw, but I swear there was one tune that got loads of airplay here in this area that included a wonderful guitar solo...oh....I just thought of it I believe, Too Rolling Stoned???? And speaking of,how about Robin Trower? Bridge of Sighs...great stuff. Old Procol Harum fan if you didn't guess. -------------- As far as genetics go, the skies the limit. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Angus Young. In that order. Although he's relatively new, Johnny Lang is pretty good too.

Gotta agree with Santana and Clapton... but man, you gotta see Keith Urban play... the guy loves playing guitar, and you can tell when he plays...
Another is Kim Mitchell... another guy that falls in love with the instrument when he picks it up.... t -------------- Tim "I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self." Aristotle TimDay@freetrainers.com |
