I'm a new member and have a few questions about diet, exercise, etc. I'm a 23 year-old female- 5'6", 135lbs (trying to tone up and hopefully drop 5-10). I've also started training for a marathon (my second-- looking to finish in under 4:30-- so I'm not a really fast runner) in October. Is it a bad idea to start on one of your programs while also training for a race? If not, can anyone recommend a good weight-training/diet program? I've got the running part down, but I would like to be more lean so that I can run faster and more efficiently.

Good luck with your training. One of my friends just completed a marathon. I couldn't handle her training never mind running the full marathon!

Hi, I'm new today too and am going to be training for my second half-marathon. I am not sure about the answer to your question, but figure that weight lifting can only help my running routine by building muscles and losing fat. Check out Jeff Galloway's site for running without injury - I think he's fab!

Weight training is the foundation to all sport and you'll get more energy and get a faster runner if you have more lean muscle mass. In October?
Well you can start to weight train 3 times a week now and then when the running get more frequent and long, twice a week of lifting will be enough.
Start taking some amino acids, creatine etc for better recovery (and fat loss). Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for the support and advice.
I've never taken creatine-- what exactly will it do, and how much should I take?

Do lots of ab crunches, push-ups, and hyper extensions. YOU CAN DO THEM DAILY. This helps to eliminate future low back problems too.
It keeps the upper body in ballance and strong.
