Hello,
I got a summer job as a waitress and during my 6 hour shifts, I really cannot eat. I know I'll get suggestions to bring an apple or a bar or whatever, but there is honestly no time where I work, I can usually bearly keep up with my tables the way it is.

My question is, should I eat larger meals before and after to make up for it? After the 6 hours I'm pretty hungry.
Thanks!

Yeah, I would think that getting a highly fibre carb meal before you start work would be good. Or try to conveniently have some crackers with peanut butter in the kitchen... so whenever you go in there, you can grab some to eat.

One thing you have to be carefully though... don't try to keep your stomach empty for too long... the stomach acids might give you gastric problems later... and that is not good.

Ok tara I'm curious to see what sandysford or bbfit1 has to say about this one. I used to wait tables for a living and I loved it so I know exactly what a busy shift is like. I was off this week and had a bunch of home improvement stuff todo and totally got 'off my feed' as they say in the sheep biz...lol. I am totally p.o.'d at myself, but was so busy I couldn't keep track of time.

thanks for the feedback. You're right, it is a tough situation. So high fiber huh? I'll do that.

Do not eat larger meals. This will not help you. Each meal is an entity in itself, and just like skipping meals to try to make up for binges, this will not work either. In 6 hours, all you would have to do is eat before work and after, and using the 3 hour rule, one meal would need to be consumed in some fashion during your working hours. Maybe you could mix up an MRP and freeze it the night before, and bring it in to work with you. Leaving it out it should thaw in 3 hours nicely by the time you need it. Or, if you have a fridge at work, just put it in there(it need not be frozen then). Add a tbsp. of flax oil to it to slow digestion a bit more. Hopefully around 3 hours into your shift, you can run back and slug it down in a matter of minutes.

Getting a break in a restaurant is a nightmare but I remember when my hb worked in restaurants the smokers always managed to find time to suck down a cigarette, so maybe you should start thinking like a smoker. lol

Seriously, have you seen those Power Bar bites? I hate Power Bars but the bite concept could actually be a useful gimmick, just make your own protein bites and keep a handful in the back, or even in your pocket. Then all you have to do is pop one in your mouth every now and then. Or BB fits idea is a good one, drinking a shake is a lot faster than trying to choke down a meal. Six hours is a long time to go without food.

Thanks. I feel a little "wussy" eating when everyone else there goes the whole 6 hours without a single complaint but I gotta do what I gotta do. Even if I have to go to my tables with powerbar chocolate chewy goo all over my teeth. haha. But I need to. Last night I worked from 3:30 to 12:30!! I thought I would get off at 9 but heck no, not in that busy restaurant. When I came home, I overate...and carbs. oops. I'll try a few different things. I did manage to chug down a glass of milk. Which don't get me wrong, is not even close to a meal, but it's really all the options I had and it was better than nothing at all, right?
Alright, thanks as always!

did you ever try putting snacks inyour pocket ...not unhealthy ones but making them bite size so as your doing a ring up or something, you could grab it from your pocket and pop it in your mouth...maybe..

Hi everyone...I've been using FT for a couple months now, and am really starting to get serious about bodybuilding....going to Court South 5 times a week....my friend who works at Court South has told me time and again that the only real way to loose weight is to eat a good healthy diet, and to eat it in a way that increases your bodies metabolic functions...y'know eating 'snack sized' meals every 2 hours or so.....it's just sooo hard to do, big ups to JessicaR..your 'bites' idea is wonderful! I think I may just use it. So ... I guess I didn't really have a question for you guys this time.......amazing what you can figure out on your own by just writing :) well....thanks for reading my first post...and by the by, I do broker work for DKW-Hyperdyne (weight loss supplements, vitamins, stimulants and the like, our biggest sellers being the Stacker line..and now to veer off the subject into a blatant but true advertisement :) I've been taking Stacker 3's for around 4 months now, and I have lost considerable weight...I was 250 when I started, I now weight 195 (of course I have been hittin the gym 5 days a week for almost 2 months now)....but back to my initial ad....our toll-free business line is 800-874-1288, ask for Kevin, or if I'm out tell them you read this for a discount :) Ok, I'm done now......I think....for now anyway...bye all.

I can totally sympathize. I used to work 10-11 hour shifts as a waitress. I had ONE break in a year and a half. One. What about making a rolled sandwich with whole wheat tortilla and chicken ect, then slicing it into thin little rounds that you can pop in your mouth whenever you can grab one. I don't like shakes, I need really food!

Tara, you could put almonds or walnuts in your pocket to munch on in between customers or while whiping down a table. Also could use jerky like this. Or make peanut butter balls and freeze them and put them in a ziplock baggie in your smock pocket.

Mix peanut butter and protein powder (could also add unsweetened cocoa for a reeses taste) so that it rolls nicely into little bite size balls. Roll in oats or ground flax seed to coat so they aren't sticky.

If you freeze them in baggies, then throw them in your pocket on the way to work, by the time you are ready to eat a few, they should be thawed enough.

tarab21-
I carry protein bars with me or mix up protein powder... you can gobble it up really fast and not feel like you want to eat EVERYTHING when you get off. DON"T wait all that time without eating anything... (especially if you are wroking out and your metabolism needs to be kept up.)
cheers

I am there with you! I have a full time job in an office during the day and then work in a delivery pizza joint to help pay for the nursery for my baby(due 12/12). I only work 4-5 hours at a time. I not sure when you work your shift but mine starts at 5:00. I try to eat something before going in to work and then if I can get something to eat before 7:00 great if not I don't sweat it as the Ab program states not to eat carbs after 7:00. Do you get an employee meal? If so take advantage of it. get something that could be used in your diet. Good luck!

Now I've got a new question along those same lines. Say you are on vacation and you know you are going to be eating at least 2 meals in a restaurant. More than likely these will not meet the standards of your regular nutrition intake, will probably be more than one of your normal meals. Is it more important for staying on track to try to stay close to your overall caloric intake, or to keep up the eating schedule you are used to? For example, even though your brunch was 1000 calories and you won't be eating dinner for 8 hours and it too will probably be 1000, should you eat a couple snacks in between?
