How can I know whether the back pain I experience a day after doing (straight leg) deadlifts is the "good pain" (of delayed muscle onset) or "bad pain" associated with back complications? I experienced some rather uncomfortable lower back pain and stiffness on Sat. after Fridays deadlift sets and was a little concerned that I could be damaging myself again (I have had some sciatic problems in the past after childbirth that has thus been eradicated) My goal is to strengthen my back and abdominals so I shall not have this problem again and I do realize the benefits of these deadlifts...but will this cost me now or in the future? And if so, is there a comparable replacement for this exercise? Any suggestions would be helpful!

First what kinda of pain a dull throbbing aching naggin pain or a sharp lancing type? All most without fail I have a very painfull lower back after deadlifts that goes away in a day or two. It remains tired and sore for 2-3 days. Rest it and see most likely it was just used a little too much. If the pain remains for longer than 4-6 days rest it a lot and maybe see a doc.
-------------- If you can still itch your nose after arm day, go do another set wussie!!!!

Thanks Mutt - It's definitely more an aching nagging type than lancing pain - lasted about 2 days - maybe I should lower the weights a little?
