How important is calorie counting? I have started a running program as well a weight lifting one. My goals are to trim up and lower my overall bf%. I have cut soda and sweets out of my diet and overall I am trying to eat more healthy...cut out fast food and junk food. Do I really need to give up on the foods i enjoy? I am averaging around 2000 calories per day.

RW is right. If you aren't writing it down, you probably aren't even close. It's a chore at first, but it becomes a habit. If you keep a log or journal it gets easier as you can flip back and see the nutrtion facts of food you've eaten before and you won't have to figure it out again. If you eat the EXACT same thing day after day, then you can get away with only doing it once, but how many of us do that? Things like sauces and spreads can ruin you if you don't pay attention. As far as giving up the foods you relly enjoy? If they happen to be ice cream or potato chips the answer is YES.

Hmm.. how exactly do you track the foods? Alternatives to Ice Cream or Chips? I don't eat either that often but when I do it is usually with my kids so having an alternative is important to me.

coolraul, If you absolutely have to have chips, there are healthier versions out there, lower fat and no fat. Same with ice cream. Or try a fruit/juice bar. It's not too early for your kids to learn how to make healthier choices also. kids will usually do what we do. There is a nutrition tracker on this site, but I keep my own Daily Food Diary with me 24/7 and write down everything I eat or drink.
