Lately because of my work and school schedule, I have only been able to lift weights on monday, tuesday and thursday. I normally do shoulders and legs on monday, back and biceps on tuesday, and chest and triceps on friday. I generally work my muscles to failure. My question is when I do barbell curls on tuesday I feel my shoulders tense uncomfortably when I do them. My friend says my form looks fine. Is this normal? My friend also suggested that maybe the shoulders are needed as stabiliser muscles for this and being that I had hit my shoulders with 10 sets the day before, this uncomfort was due to the soreness in my shoulders. Any opinions?

If you are doing freestanding curls your shoulders are tensing to keep your arms in place. Have you tried preacher curls?
It could be your shoulders are tired out from the previous day. Maybe try hitting Biceps on monday and shoulders on Tuesday, your biceps will be pre-fatigued and you may get a better back workout because they can't do as much work (or you may get a less productive back workout for the same reason). Shoulders assist in every compound upper body movement. Are you proiritizing shoulders on Monday for a particular reason? If not, try switching the order in which you work out.
Good luck!

I had that same problem. The probelem behind it is relatively simple. When I was younger, I worked my arms and chest more than anything else (for about 3 years). When I started really getting in to bodybuilding, I realized I needed to work everything.

So I started working my shoulders more, and more. Eventually, my shoulder strength caught up with my arm strength, and I really havent had a problem since.

Asimmer is right on. Try doing more isolated curls to take the strain off your shoulders.

If you work them, they will grow...

I personally have to put my day off (Wed) after shoulders on Tues. If I try to do anything but legs on the day after shoulders, I basically suck...no strength.
