Today, where my brother had his incision made for his pacemaker, revealed something new...For while it has had a wound that wouldn't heal and today one of the leads that goes into his heart had surfaced...
This means, that they will go in for surgery, most likely take out the old defibrillator and put a temporary pacer down through his neck, and depending on blood cultures, will determine when they can proceed to put a new pacer in on the other side of his chest (could take 6days or could take 6weeks)....Please pray for him and my parents in this trying time, we need all the help we can get. His name is Tim, and he's seventeen years old....Thanks ~Richard -------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

He is still in surgery but so far so good...we still have to wait for the cultures for an assesment of any bacteria in the blood....The prayers are helping thanks.-------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

Update....He go out of surgery at 7;00 tonight and is very sore and tempemental...they loaded him up on drugs and statistically he's doing fine. If the worst happens, the cultures result in bacteria, and he has to keep the temporary pacer in his neck while recieving a course of antibiotics to rid himself of the bacteria. Best case scenario, we keep going as planned no bacteria is found in the cultures and they attemp to put in a new biventricular pasemaker/defibrillator. Thanks....
By the way that girl that I posted about earlier gave me her cell number and on that sheet it said "I love you" What should I do, adress it or leave it? -------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

Do you think she is saying it as a message of support under these dire circumstances? Is she giving you her number for the same reason, as a line of support? Think it through before addressing it.-------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

I decided not to address it, if her and I are supposed to be together it will happen....right now I will worry about my brother......
He goes back under the knife tomorrow.....they are going to put in the new defibrillator...the doctor wants to use my brother as a guinea pig...my brother's heart disease is very rare....in fact every thing at this hospital and in the top 5% in the nation my brother has been the first or one of first to do....the doctor is going to do a catherization to get numbers for if another family were to come in with a similar problem and then they can say "yes, it has been shown to increase heart function as well as raise life quality...they will have numbers to go back on...right now for pediatrics they just don't have background." I guess my brother's early death will not be in vain when he goes, he will help someone someday make a choice.~in fact now that i think about it my brother is one of the first people to have a defibrillator removed(for those who dont know a defib. is what Cheney had put in) Anyway, continued prayers would be appreciated for he's going back in for the second round tomorrow after 12:00....God Be With Him! -------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

Well, he is now home and doing well, thanks for all the prayers. Hopefully this can keep him going for at least a few more years....about that girl, thank you....her and I after she gets back from vacation are going to see her pastor, I can't talk to my family that brings up to much stress...thank you for all the advice and prayers....to give you a clue on how bad his heart is, the cardiac output for a normal heart is 5 and my brother's was 1.9 before biventricular pacing but is only 2.2 after it, when it drops and weakens three points again, I believe that is when he will begin to worsen and pass on...thanks again everyone-------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

also....the defibrillator they took out of him will be displayed in the university of iowa's hospital museum, it's one of a kind, they have quit making them...-------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

I'm glad to hear your brother is pulling through, Richard - hopefully the research will continue to progress during the next few years and his future prognosis will improve as well. As a mom of a child w/ congenital heart disease (HLHS) I have a personal appreciation for the families whose treatment contributes to that research. I'm sincerely hoping for the best for all of you.
