As you can tell form the subject, I fell just short of my goal. I really wanted to hit 420 on deadlift. Its my fault, though. I put on 415 when I should've added more weight. Anyway, I did get 415 this morning (no wraps, no straps; just belt and chalk). It seemed to go up with relative ease. So after that I tried 440 2x and couldn't do it either time. 415 is a new PR for me, but I know I can do more. Maybe I'll try it again in a month or two.
Mutt, its your turn man. Let us know how you do on Sunday!! -------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" "Pain is only weakness leaving the body." "Never think of how weak you are; think of how strong you're going to be." |

Dude, 415 is still great! And it's not like you're not going to hit 420 (or higher!), just not this time. There is no rush - take your time, and I know you'll end up getting more weight in less time than even you can imagine.

WEll I did 185x10 for a warmup. Then went to 275x10, 315x8 405x1 and 425x1 so Yeah I GOT IT!! Form was kinda shaky on the last 1/4 of the rep/ I think I maybe could have hit 430 but I plan to take the next month to add more reps and better form to the 300-400lb sets.....JB you will get it next time!!!-------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

Conventional. I can't get any leverage doing it sumo style because my legs are so far apart.-------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" "Pain is only weakness leaving the body." "Never think of how weak you are; think of how strong you're going to be." |

Congrats, Mutt! That's awesome. You should be very proud of that. I'll hit it eventually. I'm patient (or at least I like to think I am).-------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" "Pain is only weakness leaving the body." You would think that because of my long arms and legs that sumo would be more appropriate, but conventional always worked for me better.-------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

Here is my deadlift workout:
315 x 3 405 x 3 455 x 3 505 x 1 560 x 1 600 x 1 625 x 1 655 x 1 I try to keep the warm-up set reps low so I'm not fatigued when I get to the singles. I take 2.5-3 minutes between singles and about 1.5 min between the triples. I use conventional style. |

What are some exercises you folks use to build your deadlift? I would like to compare, contrast and discuss. Thanks.

Romanian deadlifts are not deadlifts at all. Your coach has misnamed conventional deadlifts. Sumo deadlift is a wide stance deadlift. Feet are nearly touching the plates when you set up.

Hey Mutt,
You would probably be deadlift alot more if you didn't wear yourself out in the warm-up sets. |

I do plan on getting my max lift up in the next 3 months or so most likely go from 425 to 500-------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

What do you mean with a strong lift? Doing 3's and singles will be strong and you'll get there faster. Do other things to build your lift like back hypers, reverse hypers, good mornings, glute-hams, and etc....

I do hamstrings on leg day , I do not usualy do any other lower bak lifts at all. I do not like good mornings have seen and heard others get hurt from those. I do throw in the hyperext now and then. I do chins, bent rows and deadlifts, and then finish off back day with lat pull downs (though this is where at the end where I may throw in a few sets of hyperext).-------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

Goodmorning done incorrectly are bad for you. Good mornings done correctly are good for you. From my experience, take it for what it is worth, a strong deadlifter needs to do the back hypers with weight and reverse hypers with weight. I do back hypers and reverse hypers every week. I use bands for resistance on both. Those two exercises have helped me alot with my squat and deadlift.

It is important to go with your feelings. I do them, but it took me 3 months of coming to the gym and having the intention of doing them and skipping them because I was worried too. I injured my back playing football when I was in college and I didn't want to risk it again. But, I can honestly say that when I do them now my back doesn't hurt because I don't over do the weight and I stick the form.

The other thing is that I have to chose the most time efficent exercises out there....for upper back I do chins, and bent rows for lats as well. Deadlifts take care of the lower back and that is about all the time I have but I am willing to try new thngs all the time even more so if it will help my deadlift max increase! -------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

I started deadlifting 4 years ago to rehab my back. I started with 135 for sets of 10 (my back was trashed). I worked up to 225 x 10 over the course of a year and a half yet I could even pull 300. So, I started doing reps of 5,4,3,2,1 and added the back hypers, reverse hypers, and hamstring work. My deadlift jumped to 500 over the next year. Over the past year my deadlift has kept climbing and I sit at 655 as of Saturday night. I like to add that I don't use a belt, or straps, or wraps, or a suit. I don't take creatine or other performance enhancing substances. It is me and the bar and some chalk. The 655 is a good solid pull. My back remains flat through out and I feel good after it. My workouts take 45 minutes and if that is not time efficient then I don't know what is.

What does Wow! mean? I also have good genetics going for me. And 350 lbs is not that big of an increase in the deadlift when your squat numbers are already high. It was a matter of strengthening my back and training the lift.

Thank you. Alot of people have accused me in the past of taking certain supplements because I am strong. I started training when I was 12. My highschool football teammates accused me (because I was stronger and faster), my college teammates (again for the same reasons) and it drove me nuts because all of my hard work was dismissed by these people. People are always ready to accuse somebody who works hard and gets results because they are either jealous or are not getting the same results. Anyway, I just thought I would explain why I am sensitive to this issue.

Deadlifts are a highly underrated exercise in developing explosive power. I train the UF volleyball players with deadlifts in the off-season. This year we will box squat and deadlift. We'll go heavy on the deadlifts and 50% on the squats. We also do back hypers, reverse hypers, and other appropriate assistance exercises.
