I heard someone say that muscles have memory...is that true? If so, what does it mean?

My understanding is that muscles adapt to certain excercises if you do the same excercises all the time. This "memory" is just the muscle adapting to the same excercises, this is why it is important to mix up your workouts and excercises so that the muscle doesn't have a chance to adapt and reduce your ability to grow muscle.
-------------- Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

Yes and say you have a long layoff, the "memory" will allow you to get back to the previous level faster than someone just starting out.....

This muscle "memory" we speak of is not actually a function of the muscle tissue itself but rather the nerves contained within the muscle. Nervous system adaptation is what allows our muscles to return to previous levels so quickly.
