I weight 185lbs and am 6'1. Ok I do my chest routine on wednesdays and last wednesday I went to do the flat bench press and was only able to max at 175lbs. Is there something wrong I was able to finally push past my weight the week before and do 190lbs. Is this common or am I doing something wrong. I usually try and add 5 more lbs to my work out each week and its been working until now.

Can you list the chest workout you're doing right now, number of sets and number of reps? I don't think theres anything wrong though as long as you're using proper form. After I cut down on reps, my bench went up 50 pounds over the last 8 months.

That sounds like a common case of overtraineditus to me....take a couple days off then post me after that....it may have to do with attituditis...up the intensity and watch out for things that could alter your mood, when you find out what they are, avoid them...

In addition to what richardjst said also consider general fatigue & poor diet can have a traumatic effect on performance on a day to day basis.

I start with a low set at 100lbs to get worked up I do that 8 times then I start my routine. I start with 145lbs to that 10 times or to fail then I add 10 more then do that 8 times or to fail then i'm 165 do that 6 times or to fail then I do 175lbs 4 times. Like I said I made it up to 195 the one week i was able to life it twice. This time I made it to 175 and was struggling big time but I guess it might have been cause I was stressed out about school and what not. Tomorrow is my chest workout day so I'll see how it goes tomorrow and keep you posted. Thanx

i feel that sometimes ..
there is days where i can do incline bench more then
flat ,,
i think is due to how is your program is too,
i think if you start doing other chest workout and do
flat bench then is goign to be less then when you start your workout with flat bench.

First of all the rep range is ok, but you really are not susposed to "max" out each week////try adding more reps to that weight, then when you can do 10 for each set add some weight do this for like 3 workouts. Then go to a 10, 8, 6 reps range. Do that for each workout always trying to add weight. Once a month try to max out...I bet you will see a great improvement

I totally agree with Mutt7707. You should only try to max out once a month. Also try different chest exercises to build your whole chest no just the center portion. If you do the flat bench every wednesday with the Barbell, you should try it with Dumbells the following week. If you do the same routine every week, and never change it your body will get use to that routine and you will not see the gains you were originally getting. I hope this info helps out, and Good luck on reaching your goals.

Thanx for the hint K19. I just lifted with the barbell today and reached 190lbs. I do the barbell lift then I do the dumbell incline press there after. I'll try it your way though I do need to start switching my routine up. Thanx

Big benchers will tell you the key to great benching...it's in the triceps...if you bench one day a week then 2 or 3 days later, directly hit your triceps hard and heavy....when tricep strength increases so will your bench!
