I was wondering, is there a basic rule of thumb as to how long you should rest between sets? I know it's important to keep your heart rate up while working out! But ya gotta rest for a sec or two....or 20...or 30 ? I'm just starting out going to the gym so I want to make sure I am on the right track! Thanks for the help!

Generally for growth most people keep rest between sets at 60 seconds. When you lift heavy, under 6 reps, more rest is needed.

it all depends on your needs...trying to burn fat keep it down to 15-45 sec between sets depending on your health levels...if your in tip top shape, it should only take the time it takes to load the bar....if your trying for strength, 45-3min should safice, depending on health levels...and intensity....all in all listen to your gut if you can go again right away then go, if you cant get your predetermined reps then wait a little longer before you start your next set.
