I am looking for some input on these subjects. I want to know what you people think is the best protein for gaining muscle while not putting on fat. One important note is that I do not have access to purchases from the internet. The first stuff I tried was Weider brand protein (soy based) basically because it was cheap; its sold at Walmart. It had similar protein content on the label to the stuff at GNC. I have also heard that GNC brand stuff (pro performance or something) is not as good as other stuff and that the staff get push money to sell it (could be hearsay). Also, both weider brand and GNC carry different products that include more carbohydrates. What is the benefit of those?
Secondly, can someone give me some info on glutamine and amino acid tablets. I've heard a lot about them but never actually what they do. From what I gather they help the affectiveness of the protein (amino acids) or they help with muscle soreness (glutamine); is this true? As far as muscle soreness goes I could careless if its just a discomfort issue and I always have four days off before working the same muscle group. If you suggest these things, what brands are good? Again, I noticed walmart carries these products under the weider brand which is cheaper than the stuff from GNC. Any and all thoughts on these things would be appreciated, as well as any other comments or suggestions. Thank you.
Note: as far as diet is concerned im taking in about 100 grams of protein a day and I weigh 180. I also drink about 4 litres of water a day.

Well I wil be happy to give my personal opinion on the subject. First of all the all time best muscle building protein is the type from whole healthy food.( I know, not what your loking for right?) The thing to remember about supplemental protein is that just like carbs they have different rates of absorbtion. Also just like carbs they have both appropriate & inappropriate times that they should be consumed. Before we get to far into this I would also like to add that 100 grms is probably a little lite, most sources reccomend about 1 gram per lb or in your case 180 grms per day divided in 6-7 meals.
On to the topic of choseing the right protein for the right time. Most of the time it is best to stick to with a slower acting protein such as a caisen (milk) as these abssorb slowl & retain nitrogen levels over a greater period of time(much like complex carbs) o fcourse the whey isolate is the protein of choice for post workout due to the fact that it is quickly taken up by muscle & has great potential anti-catabolic effects.
As for glutamine & amino acids I am not really all that sold, Now certain aminos taken alone on an empty stomach have shown to have very specific effects there exact action is still somewhat questionable, for the most part alot of these products (glutamine included have yet to be any better than a good complete protein source (most of which are enhanced with glutamine & bcaas anyway but are still cheaper per serving. Of course oipinion on this topic varies greatly but this is just the opinion I have reached thus far, hope this helps & good luck with your training.

For proteins I've heard Nitro-tech from Muscletech is the best protein available though its very expensive. I use Dymatize Elite Whey & find it very good & excellent value for money although I have to purchase it from the internet.
EAS Simply Whey recently won a magazine poll over here (UK) for best protein supplement though I have my suspicions that EAS were the sponsors of the poll so take from that what you will.
Like plfitness said though, healthy food is the best source of protein & you really need to up your intake.

I highly recommend going to www.proteincustomizer.com. Great prices, top quality. And as far as what type of proteins, a very fast acting protein is best post workout, hydrolosates first if you can get them(they have a low weight hydrolosate for $9.00 or so a lb., great price). Make sure you get chocolate flavoring. A whey isolate would be next. The rest of the day a blended protein like casien, whey, eggwhite, even a hit of soy won't hurt.

BB1...isn't whey the fastest acting protein? So why would you reccomend it for the rest of the day?

I don't. I recommend a blended protein, or at the very least just casein based. Wasn't aware I did recommend a pure whey. What I meant in my post when I inculded whey was just that it was included in the blend. Pretty tough to get a protein that isn't.
