I am faced daily with the predicament.. what can I have for breakfast. It is so hard to find something protein based that I can grab and go with. i end up stopping at the grocery store and getting grilled chicken. Does anyoe have any breakfast ideas? I do not have time after the gym to make egg whites.

I don't know if this would help you or not, but every Sunday I hard boil about 3 dozen eggs and put them in the fridge for the week. Or maybe you could grill chicken breasts ahead of time for quick sandwiches. Low-sugar peanut butter sandwiches would be good too.-------------- OSU Law Rugby....specializing in personal injury and pain & suffering. | |

Thanks. I know planning is what it is all about! If I do not plan, I grab and go and hardly ever is the "grab and Go" what it should be!
Thanks for the ideas! |

If you have an electric frying pan you can make fried eggs in less then five minutes. I just crank the pan to 400, takes about 1.5 min to heat up, while waiting I mix up some eggs into a bowl, pour the eggs into the pan (with a little cooking spray), evenly spread out the eggs through the pan, cook for 2 minutes, add a bit of cheese and roll the egg up.
If you just want the egg whites have you ever tried cracking an egg in half and moving the yolk from one half of the shell to the other? It typically makes the yolk fall out. Or you can put it into a bowl and flick it out with a spoon. I don't know how much time you have, but those ideas take only 5-10 minutes to prep and eat. -------------- - Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do. Its just about doing it, and doing it right. ~Brad~ |

Make a shake. Find some you like at the nutrition store, look for a decent carb - protein ratio, depending on your needs. At least you will get in some good protein and refill your gylcogen after your workout.
Time crunches are one of the reasons meal replacements were invented. Otherwise.. how about 3 sticks of lowfat string cheese and an apple? Or find low carb tortillas and pre-make some breakfast burritos earlier in the week, then just pop one in the microwave to reheat and go! If you get some lean ham slices and eggbeaters, you could quick cook the beaters in the microwave, toast a whole wheat english muffin, or low-carb bread while the eggs cook, put the ham (maybe a slice of lowfat cheese) and eggs on the muffin and go (healthy version of mcmuffin). You could make some low-sugar breakfast bars or all-bran muffins with protein powder in them. If you want me to look up the recipes for those, i will. I know I have them somewhere. Breakfast (especially after working out) nees to have some carbs and protein and a little fat. Good luck! |

Thanks for all the great ideas. Asimmer, on one thing that hinders this all is this diet i am doing allows NO carbs, but unlimited protein and veggies (no carrots, beans, peas, etc.). I know I need to eat something, and the ideas above are great! I wish I could get a diet that works short of the NO carb route, b/c I know it is not feasible in the long run. I guess if I am going to add complex carbs, I best do it in the AM after a work out!?

Amy, I am interested in your bar and muffin recipes. I tried (again) this weekend to come up with something hi-protein, lowfat and low sugar with no luck. The bars weren't too bad but boring. The muffins are just plain gross. I don't have the heart to throw them out so found that if I put a glog of sweetpotato butter on them they are tolerable...just. Seems oil and sugar are pretty important ingredients to baked goods, without them you get sawdust!-------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

AZRED - you can substitute apple sauce for "oil" in recipes. hcolantonio -- you NEED complex carbs when you workout, they are VERY important. I would like to see the recipes too, asimmer.-------------- Gramma |

hey deby, long time no see! I thought you could and am going to look for some this weekend. I did use a mashed banana in a bar recipe and that worked pretty good too. I hate wasting a lot of costly ingredients to come up with something that is barely edible, so I will eat them anyway...eventually.-------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

rune puree also works well and keeps things moist.
I am still looking (can you say too many files and books full of stuff?). Here is one to try from Oxgen Magazine, sounds tasty: berri-licious crepes non-fat cooking spray 3 egg whites 1 TBSP skim milk 2 TBSP blueberry muffin mix (Martha white is listed) 1/2 cup fat free cottage cheese 1 TBSP berry all-fruit spread (Knott's 100% Fruit triple Berry Jam is listed) 1/2 fresh berries Spray large skillet with non-fat spray and place over med-high heat. Combine egg whites, milk and muffin mix in a bowl. Mix with fork until fluffy, the pour into preheated pan. Spread so it covers the bottom of the pan. Cook one minute on each side. While crepe is cooking, combine cottage cheese and jam and microwave for 20-30 sec. Flip crepe onto a plate, pour cottage cheese mixture into center. Then roll sides up and top with fresh berries. They don't break down the Pro/carbs/fat 9a frustrating thing about some magazines), but this would be a nice treat on the weekend without totally blowing you diet plan. I will keep looking....oh, wait - same article here is a muffin recipe Muffin magic 1/2 c rolled oats 1/2 c bran 1/2 c low-fat buttermilk 1 c whole wheat flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 1 medium orange 1/2 c splenda sweetener 1/4 c apple sauce 1 eg, beaten 3/4 c dried cranberries Preheat oven to 400 degrees Celsius. Combine oats, bran and buttermilk in a medium bowl - set aside for five minutes. In a seperate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Next, grate orange rind into a large bowl and squeeze in the fruit's juice. Mix in splenda, apple sauce and egg. Stir until smooth. Add oat mixture, then fold inflour mixture. Finish by adding cranberries. Spoon batter into 12 Pam-sprayed muffin cups. bake for 15 minutes. Each muffin has 80 calories, 1 g fat, 15g carbs, 4g pro, 3g fiber.(now, why do they break down the content of that recipe, but not the crepe one??argh.) |

Mmmmm, that sounds great! I found soy flour the other day, and even though you can only substitute 1/3 of it for the flour used, it adds a little more protein to recipes. I wonder if you could use brown rice flour instead of the whole wheat flour? Guess I better follow the instructions the first time before I go screwing it up...lol! Thanks Amy.-------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

Yeah, make it once, then change one ingredient, see how it is, then another... good luck!

Here is one from the morning paper:
Breakfast Bars (one serving) 1 packet alba or weight watchers chocolate drink mix (I bet you could use 2 scoops protein powder) 2 TBSP cold coffee 1 TBSP peanut butter 2 TBSP raisins 2 TBSP reg or quick oats, uncooked. Mix all together, place on plastic wrap. Shape into a log, wrap tightly. Freeze, cut into slices and enjoy. Sounds like it would be interesting, anyhow. -------------- Challenge + Consistency = Results \"You do or you do not. There is no try.\" - Yoda |

Gee, my breakfast can't be too healthy then...
Mostly I just fry 6 rahers of bacon (with the fat removed) and 3 fried eggs (salted)... It must be quite good protien, not too many carbs, and I just top it off with a good hot cup of coffee (no sugar). It may not sound too good for a lot of you, But I have lost about 9 kgs since I started having this for breakfast each morning when I get up at 4am. |

What great ideas here. You can't go wrong. I make a mish mash I found on the net. 1/3 c oats, six egg whites, 2 tbsp splenda, vanilla and cinammon to taste and one tbsp of natural Peanut butter. I spray Pam in a pan and pour the mixture in it and stir frequently till thick and set. Sounds and looks crazy but it is really good. A good protein/carb mix . On weekdays I am at work by 7 and don't have a lot of time so I make a bowl of higher protein cereal like Kashi or Optimum cereals. I like cereal.
By the way if your recepie calls for low fat buttermilk and here in Canada I can't find such a creature, I improvise and make "buttermilk" using a tbsp of vinegar to one cup of 1% milk. |

The only thing GoLean Crunch fires up on me is the old methane gas turbine :)) However, I could dump three scoops of protein powder and a teaspoon of creatine into my shaker cup with a blindfold on (which is, effectively, exactly what I'm wearing top of the morn'.)

Go to wal-mart and get one of the microwave egg things. It's shaped like a big huge eye contact glass case. hehe ... You put your eggs in it and microwave it for 1 minute and it makes perfect eggs and no time at all!
