Lots of good clean food. Lean meats, fibrous carbs, lots of water. adequate rest.
Support your efforts nutritionally, don't overtrain, and you should grow muscle without excess fat gain.

When you lose weight are you still trying to lift the same amount of weight and failing? You can try taking glutamine to preserve your muscle mass while you lose your body fat.

Unfortunately bodyweight adds up to strength. It is normal to lose strength while dieting. Fat makes you strong! Usually the main reason you lose strength is you are not getting the prefferred fuel your body uses, glucose, and it has to use protein to make it. When doing lots of cardio, supplementing as you would with weights is essential to maintain lean tissue, especially doing HIIT or long bouts of cardio. CLA on a diet probably won't help, but if you are trying to gain, it will help alot. It has the ability to block fat transport, thus making certain your fat cells don't get any larger(to a point of course). So if you are trying to gain, take CLA, 4-6 gr. divided doses with meals. It must be taken with carbs or it will be oxidized. Good luck to you...
