Right now my goal is to add muscle without adding very much fat (just so you know).

How much sugar can be taken in each day without risking any detrimental effects? I enjoy eating cereal with milk (1 cup of Kashi w/ 1 cup skim milk has about 25 grams of sugar). Should I be worried about sugar consumption at all if I'm not wanting to lose weight?

Also, please note that my problem is not with candy or ice cream or other crap, just daily intake items that I would like to appropriately tailor to a healthy diet.

Thank you.

You should always be wrrried about sugar consumption. Sugar is/are empty calories, meaning they can and will be processed as glucose and stored as fat. Plus you have the danger of repeated insulin spikes from rising and falling blood sugars, this is the opposite of what you want through out the day. As far as naturally occuring sugars like in skim milk, you probably needn't worry too bad. Try to do this earlier in the day, prefferably morning, to get your sugars, as insulin is very sensitive at this time and can be used. The only other time you want to actually take in simple sugars is immediately post workout, here the idea is to create an insulin surge by raising blood sugars. They can drop dramatically durning a hard trainng session, and no muscle building can occur till cortisol is stopped (cortisol is a muscle wasting/eating hormone your body produces as a defense against hard work/stress basically, being very simple about it) and blood sugars stabilized. This needs to be done as mentioned immediately post training, even 30 min. can make a difference.

Thanks BB1fit,

I want to be as conscious as possible of what I'm putting into my body.
