Well, I have to admit, since starting my exercise program I'm learning all sorts of new words and phrases.. such as Basal Metabolic Rate.

However, understanding what they mean is a bit of a challenge. Am I correct in guessing that the BMR is the minimum amount of calories you need to be alive to do the basic things, such as sleeping and breathing?

Am I also correct in thinking that eating an amount of calories between your maximum allowed caloric intake and your BMR will help lose weight (along with an exercise program)?

Thanks....

You are correct on the BMR.

As to your other question, not sure what you mean by your "maximum" allowed caloric intake? Maximum for what?Could you be a bit more specific?

Oh.. on the Personal Nutritional Profile, it suggests that my total calories, then adds ".. calculated maximum, do not exceed for current goal."

So, the maximum amount of calories for your goal. Ok, is your goal gaining or losing? I am assuming losing, since you have no profile, I can only guess from your post. So, in a short answer, yes. But, you need to be efficient about doing this. Cutting calories too quickly (too much)will result in an instant loss of muscle tissue. Extremely low calorie diets burn as much muscle as they do fat. And to make things worse, as your lean tissue amounts drop, so does your metabolism. This really defeats your purposes, because when you do start to eat again, and someday you will, with your metabolism being slowed to a crawl, your body will actually try to store everything, and you will gain weight very quickly. You see it in these fad diets all the time. So, be careful here.

Glad to help. To further this and find the right calorie amount for you, you will have to a bit of the work here. Most formulas are kind of vague, and hard to use for everyone. A more surefire way is to take and write down everything you eat for one solid week. This means everything. At the end of that week, average up the calories. This will be very close to your maintenance calories. Now, the first job is to "clean" up your diet with these same amount of calories, getting rid of the sugary treats, drinks, you know the story. Substitute the same amount of calories in nutritious foods. Stay there for a week or 2 and see what you do. If you are losing 1-2 lbs. per week, then stay with that amount. If you are maintaining, (no change), then reduce your calories by 250-300 per day, until the losing starts. Then stay there until the losing stops, and adjust accordingly. Make sure you are training well, and you will see results that you like. Remember, do not adjust your calories downward too much, you will be burning calories in your training also. Hope this gives you some insight into the proper way to do this. Good luck to you.

After years of resisting "calorie counting" I have finally caved in and started. I thought that I had been eating healthy but I was shocked to see that my daily caloric intake was 1600 - 1700 per day. My BMR calculates to approximately 2400 cals/day with training days around 3300 cals.

I believe that by eating almost 1000 cals below my BMR that my metabolic rate must have slowed dramatically, eplaining why it has been so hard to lose fat.

As a result I have started to increase my calories by 500 - 600 to start and increasing as my body adjusts. I plan on investing in skinfold callipers and a good scale to keep tabs on my progress. I am curious to see how long it will take to get my BMR back on track... anyone have any information on this? I'm a knowledge junky and looking for an info fix.

Highest I have ever heard of is 30% metabolic slowdown. However, the good news is this is not permanent, and easily reversible with sound dietary habits.

Glad to hear that, I thought it would have been a lot worse.
