I've read that having carbs after you workout is really bad, that your body locks them up and into fat, and then I've read that you must get it after your workout. So what's the deal? And if so what is the timeline?
thanks!!

You definitely need carbs after training. Carbs are muscle sparing, and especially so at this time. Cortisol is running rampant, and insulin is the shutoff valve. Simple carbs with protein is essential post workout. You are at a super compensation uptake at this time. Within 30 minutes is optimal. Past that and you are in that grey area with your window of opportunity.

So then is it ok to mix your protein with milk for the needed carbs, post-workout?

No, it is not. Not if you want to take advantage of super compensation time right after training. Milk is casein, way to slow digesting. Dextrose and maltodextrin are best. In a pinch, gatorade can be used,(the powder is best, for some reason it seems to have more dextrose) but not near the benefit of the Dex and Malto.
