Hello to all,

Today I worked on day two of week one. All is good apart from the "Straight leg Dead lift". It really put pressure on my lower back. Any tips from you experts would be good concearning technique or an alternative exercise to get the same effect would be greatly appreciated.

Warmly

Hamstring curl machine It will affect the lower back as it still is a deadlift. Keep at it they work well Lighten the weight till you get it

I know they are called stiff leg deads however how is your form? I do them quite heavy and religiously. You want your knees to be slightly bent. Don't move them during the actual exercise just make sure they are slightly bent through out. In other words don't lock your knees. This exercise is supposed to focus on hamstrings and but not on back. If you want a good back exercise for the lower back do good mornings. Good luck

I have to differ here Bowers on good mornings. I talked to some that do them and see great results, but everyone i have known that did them has gotten hurt. They were using good form and lighter weight and still had very nasty back issues. 2 of them are members here. I think, that the risks out weigh the benefits. A great back exercise is the good old Deadlift. I would stay away from good mornings....or is you do them be very careful....

Thanks guys,

bowers, I know its for legs, thats why I was a tad cocearned. Also this was the first time I had tried them, so form and too much free weight could be to blame. it just seemed like a strange exercise for legs. I will keep your comments in mind next time around. Thanks to you Both.

Well, Well, Well, Lets see taking into consideration that the lower back is the weakest part or "biggest flaw of the muscular system because it is such a small muscle group " I would suppose some do get hurt performing this exercise however the most direct and effective exercise would be in my opinon is the good morning. The deadlift which I love is a great overall exercise but if you truely want to target the lower back I say go for it. Up the weight don't be scared

I hear you on the fact that good mornings target the lower back, but so do deadlifts, and the deadlift offers a total body workout as well. I have just seen many peole do the GM and do it badly cause no one knows the form well it just makes more sense to not do them , but if you feel ok with the risk then go for it!!

I agree with you mutt. The deadlift is by far not only a great overall exercise but in most circles it is a true test of overall strength. I will be competing in my 4th meet this March and have never seen my deads go up as much as they have since I started doing good mornings. I agree they are dangerous. That is why they should be done with minimal weight to begin with. Just because they are dangerous doesn't mean they shouldn't be done. Deadlifts are also a very dangerous exercise as are squats because I see people do them wron all the time. I just feel any exercise done with proper form can only benefit .

My goal for the March meet is 600lbs. I haven't done a 1rm yet this season for deads. Last season I was hovering around the 550lb. mark. I will be training a 1rm next week and I will post an update. I am excited because last year I competed at 220lbs. This year I am not going to try 220 I am goin to lift 242 there is no way I could every diet down that far and maintain my strength. You are right mutt I agree with your last statement. Hey where is your dead at? Just curious. Do you ever compete? Its a rush there is no bigger rush!! After this season I am going to stop training power and my goal will be to compete by 2006 in a natural bodybuilding show!!!!@ Good luck

My last max was 425 in july.....I had to leave the gym for 3 months (money issues and small nagging injuries). I want to compete in a deadlift comp next year or so, I wanna get down to 250 or so(about 50lbs less then now) and see what happens
