Some of you know I had rotator cuff surgery 5 months ago. I did the requisite physical therapy. I started light weight high rep training about 3 1/2 months ago and did 8 weeks. I went back to hevier weight lower reps about 6 weeks ago.

On the first set on most shoulder exercises the shoulder is stiff. It loosens up with each set. The pain is more on some days and less on others. Why is this. When is the damn thing gonna heal and stop hurting? Sorry, frustration sets in after a while. When I finish this last 2 weeks of heavy/low rep lifting I am thinking of going back light weight and high rep. Will I lose my gains??

I'd like to hear from people about their recoveries and suggestions for where I go from here to get this behind me.
It isn't my nature to complain per my wife and therapist but this crap is messin with my head now. Wah Wah Wah.

Suggestions????????

I wish I could help you. I've had two knee surgeries and a back surgery, but all of them were before I started workout out with intensity.

From what I recall, though, you MUST heal fully if you are ever to go back to heavy loads. That means doing exactly what your doctor and therapists say to do AFTER you've accurately, completely, and in many different ways, educated them on your goal to get back to heavy lifting.

Good luck man, and patience will win the day for you this time around.

Charlie,

I'm 3 wks post op rotator cuff. My OS took me out of the sling after 1 wk ....thank god! I start PT Dec.1.....I've read that depending on the size of the tear re-hab can be up to 9-12mo.I'm doing only real passive exercises now and lots of ice. I know what you are going through......Good luck and hope all goes well. Hey we may have to start our own room A Pain In The CUFF!

how soon after surgery did you start PT?

jwagoner, mine was no movement at all for 6 weeks. Then 12 weeks of PT. Its a real pain in the cuff as you say. Just drivin me a little crazy because it hurts some times and not at others. I heard 9-12 months myself but with lifting heavier I guess I got too optomistic.

My main concern at this time is that if I go to high rep lower weight routine will I lose a bunch of gains.

Charlie,

I think your re-hab is the most important thing. Do you have full ROM? Lets not forget that the shoulder is the slowest healing joint due to its limited blood supply and full recovery is just going to take time. How old are you?
I'm 50 and just looking to re-hab and get full ROM and then work on strength. The last thing we want to do is re-injure the damn thing.I have resigned myself to the fact that it is going to be a slow process and getting back to my regular workout is going to take some time.I would stick with the high reps/lower weight for building strength and get the shoulder well.... then bulk up.....good luck!

ROM is good. I think I will do 8 weeks of higher rep lower weight. Good luck on your rehab. If you wanna talk about it , E mail me

Tanks mon

i had back surgery 7 months ago for a herniated disc and now i have full blown sciatica in both legs..it sucks...they think it is scar tissue pressing on the nerves and might need surgery again to remove it...i had a cortisone shot to see if that will work.....good luck
