Do heavy deadlifts..they hit the back more than you think....bent over rows....do pullups, if your reppin out 3x10 there, grab a belt add some weight...pull downs dont work the same...if you cant do more than 5 in a row...do one at a time till you get to 20....one arm db rows also work well..another one that isn't used by many is standing straight arm pull downs(those will add thickness quickly if done correctly)....heavy work for the back buddy and you'll notice more muscles showing then you knew you had...hope some of this helps

do wide grip pullups. tons of them. when you first start out especially you can get huge gains from just doing the main exercises. i recommend including deadlifts from the get go..but make sure you get the pullups in. if you are already pretty good with them, do as many sets as it takes to get to 50 total..do this for 4 or 5 weeks then maybe switch to a ladder or add some weight to your body. guarantee you will get thicker... do them right and your back will look like a kite.

Deadlifts are essential to gaining a lot of back strength, and your muscles will grow a lot, therefore gaining thickness, but I know for a fact that dumbbell pullovers make your back look wide and thick. I know that most people say they are intended for chest, but they also have amazing results for your lats.

pullovers definitely hit your lats and rib cage..bring out your chest but bulk of the work is in the back
