I found a good warm up on an eliptical trainer was best to loosen up. I went light for about 6 weeks, then slowly returned to my pre-injury weight levels - but very cautious. I've been stressing core strengthening - abs and back - to prevent future injuries. Also lots of stretches - I got the same advice from my chiropractor, physical therapist and back surgeon (whose services were not required - thank goodness).
Most important - be patient - you've had nerve damage and its very very slow to heal. After about 6 months I didn't have any pain, but after 15 months, I still have some diminished function in my left foot/ankle. I can run a mile, but my stride gets noisy (flapping foot) after a 1/2 mile.
sciatica is diagnosed a ton.. without ever really being the problem.. there are muscles that are beneath the gluts that the sciatic nerve either runs under them or can even pierce thru .. alot of times.. just getting a good deep massage and making sure to stretch the lateral hip rotator muscles.. you can get relief and not need the rest you took.. take it from me. I had the same problem..luckily.. I am a NYS Licensed and Nationally Certified Massage Therapist along with being a Chiropractic student.. I had the knowledge and the resources available for a quick recovery and was back in the gym in just a couple days!! Good Luck and Happy Holidays!!
