im interested in starting one of the programs listed on this site.i will be using free weights only with a basic weight bench.my question is...how much weight should i use per exercise?i understand that too little doesnt do any good and too much results in an injury.is there a rule of thumb?im 39,active and average height/weight propor.any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to freetrainers jball. You would want to use a weight that you feel comfortable with, but is difficult on the last 3 reps of each set. There is no real number to start with, as everyone varies in stregnth.
Don't push it, remember form is very important.
Hope this helps and happy holidays.

if you are working out by yourself do enough that gives u a challenge btu not enough that it will get stuck on you chest. If your using a barbell best move would be keep the clamps off ...so if you do get stuck u can just push the bar off.

Its not the weight, it is the form. Bad form gives you injuries....combine bad form with heavy weight can be even worse. I lift very heavy but my form is good thus little injury. Good luck

i liek to use a weight that i know i can handle and go to failure. ex. i can bench alot more than 185lbs but it how i do it, i concentrat on moving the weight with that muscle and only that muscle, i imagin it getting bigger as i work out( mind muscle connection) and i do that till i can't do that weight no more in that form, when i feel i'm out of that groove then i'm done for that set wither it be 5 or 15 depending on the weight. of coarse iw ork out by myself, trust me the 1st few reps and u 'll knwo its too much lol after a while u'l be able to listen to ur body and till wether its ok to grab the 50s or the 80s
