squats and deadlifts are super for the core

If you mean what is sometimes referred to as "functional strength," or even just overall foundation building, then charlie826 is definitely putting you on the right track.
Any of the compound lifts are great: squat, deads, bench, military, clean and jerk, snatch, etc., will all build a great base.

another good one is..........zeculer sumo squats, and front squats, and good mornings are prety god too...........but deadlifts and cleans are really good too the work the whole body
