Hey al, Here is some more good stuff from "Mind & Muscle" by Blair Whitmarsh, Phd

"The following are some tips for improving your motivation:
- replace the word can't with can in your daily vocabulary. Can applies to 90% of the challenges that you face, both in life and in bodybuilding.
- replace the word try with will in your daily vocabulary. When you try something, you have a built-in excuse for failure.
- create a self-fulfilling prophecy. Focus your attention and energy on achieving the bodybuilding goals you have established. Forget about the consequences of failure. Remember, YOU USUALLY GET WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT MOST.
- List five of your most important desires in bodybuilding (or life, folks). Next to each one, list the benefit or payoff you will get when you achieve it. Look at this list before you go to bed each night and when you get up each morning.
- Find an expert. If there is something you want to do or experience...but are afraid to try, find someone who is currently doing what you want to do and talk to him or her. Perhaps you want to change your workouts or start using a vitamin supplement. Perhaps you are thinking about entering you first competition, turning professional, or becoming a personal trainer. Get the facts. Make a project of learning everything you can from bodybuilders you identify as winners.
- Develop a new vocabulary for talking about yourself. For every one of your goals, make it a habit to repeat again and again, "I want to - I can. I want to - I can."
- Motivate others. When motivating training partners, paint the pictue of what achievement looks and feels like, and demonstrate your confidence and belief in their ability to accomplish their goals. Rather than say "It is almost impossible for you to make those muscular gains," motivate them:"I have noticed your commitment to your diet.Keep up the hard work. It is realy beginning to pay off."
- Deal with your fear. It is normal to worry, certainly, but doing so can negatively affect your motivation for bodybuilding (or life). Besdies, WE MOST OFTEN WORRY ABOUT THINGDS THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Communication and understanding can go a long way in transforming worry into positive, action-directed thinking. Start by dealing with the issues underlying your fears. For example, if you are worried what your spouse will think of your commitment to bodybuilding, it would be best to sit down and talk with him or her about it.
- stay positive. When your training partner tells you hios or her problems, respond with a solution-oriented feedback. When you are having problems focus on finding the answer.
- stay focused. When you set new goals or start a bodybuilding project, concentrate all of your energy and intensity, without distraction, on the successful completion of that goal or project.
(Adapted from 'The psychology of winning' Waitley, 1987) "

So, their is another weapon in your arsenal against apathy, now get off your butts and go make it happen!!!

Wow...great post asimmer! There is nothing better than training yourself to think more positive, not east to do, BUT very effective. "built-in excuse for failure" is what struck me the most on this post. For alot of people they have this self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. Its when that cycle is broken by reinforcing yourself to think positive or at least in a different perspective about yourself. You all keep me motivated. I'd like to add a little tid-bit of advice as well: You don't know until you've tried it.

Thanks, it gives me something to remember when I get discouraged.

It's not what we eat or drink occasionally, but what we consume on a daily basis that determines our ongoing level o health.
