I'm just wondering the best technique for lifting heavier weights for max muscle build. Is there like a rule of thumb or do you just wing it?

Not like "don't arch your back" and that crap, i know that. Its just that I heard somthing about flexing the muscle at the top of the rep, anything you can tell me of that nature would be greatly appreciated

there are many excercises you would have to name one for me to help u out specifically.....but this is what i do......on core lifts( squats, bench, cleans, deadlifts, close grip benchs) don't worry about the contraction of the muscle persay, concentrate on full rang of motion( rom). these excercise are mutli joint and muti muscle, so just worry about controling the weight going up and down.

isolation lifts( flys, leg extensions, pretcher curls, concentration curls etc.) these are what i call my shapping excercies, these i'm not concerned about the weight just my form has to be flawless so i can get that muscle to " look " good......when u do these u focase on the ROM as well as the contraction......ex. for tricep push downs at the bottom of the movement count 1,2 and squeeze ur tricep to the bone ( FULL CONTRACTION)

core lifts build over all muscle mass, while isolation lifts shape the muscle....thsi is y mostly power lifters look like powerlifts and body builder looklike body builders...........however many excercises can be concered both depending on how u do the reps and weights hope i helped u out a lil bit
