Hi ,
I have a question on protein powders ..I had intended at first to buy the greens plus protein however it was 75.00 $ . for 850 g I bought precision iso-pro low carb before I open this could someone give me some feed back on it. It cost $ 40 for 900g Nutrition Value 1 scoop 35 g energy 131 cal protein 30 g fat.6 carbs1.4 g sucralose iso pro's major proteins include beta-lactoglobulin 44- 50% alpha - lactalbumin 15 -21% glycomacropeptides 14 - 16 % immunoglobulin 9- 10 % bovine serum albumin 5- 6% lactoferrin .5-1% lactoperoxidase .5 - 1% ingredients: cross flow microfiltered whey protein isolate, gucomannan.sucrolose, alpha lipoic acid,* D-Pinitiol, bromelain, natural and artifical flavors as a beginner I am not sure which to buy. Price is factor but I would go the extra price for the best quality. I know this question has probably been asked lots but could someone give me some pointers on what to look for on the package when buying protein in simple terms ...my knowledge is slowly improving , btw I want the protein to use as a mpr and post workout. I am 42 5'4" 150 lbs , work out 3 times per week also do cardio. After much reading on this site I have learned the value of a good diet and am doing my best to clean it up. thanks caroline thanks Caroline |

First off, you are looking at 86% protein per scoop, that is a very good start. I consider anything below 75% inferior. Because you would be paying for more fillers.
Protein isolate is one of the best qualities of protein. The carbs are less than 2 grms and the fat is very low, I would say it is good, and something I would use if it tated ok. Also it has sucralose instead of aspartame. Another good feature. But I am not familiar with greens, and the iso pure is better for your $$$. Hope this helps, and good luck. -------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

Whey is the best post workout protein but not very good as a meal replacement mix if that is what you were asking.

Carivan thankyou your reply helped , and I am slowly getting an understanding of the basics.
I see you live in Montreal I am a little further east in NFLD I am an import from ireland and have been living in Canada for 20 yrs . I assume you speak french both my daughters do french immersion ..though sometimes it was tough for them having an irish mom ..who always said wee which didn't mean yes ! Charlie thanks for the welcome . I have really pulled up my socks in learning about proper protein carbs fat etc and from all your guys help in here I see now where diet plays a major role with all of this .Sorry to be so long winded lol. I was hoping that the protein mix would boost my protein if I didn't get all my meals in ...I am a shift worker and sometimes eating gets complicated . With the stuff I bought today would I be able to do this and would I need to add more than water to it ...so it would do as a stand by ? if not what should I be looking for ? thanks again Caroline |

Well, it's -29 here tonight in Montreal, with a windchill of -4- to -50! I'm watching my hockey team lose to Toronto, what can be worse??
You assumed right, I do speak french, kinda have to around here, if you know what I mean. Is it cold and snowy on the rock? There are some good Mrp's out there, Just watch out for the fat content. Labrada makes a good quality Mrp. -------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

Look into soy, casin and egg sources. Egg whites are super protien. My wife uses soy for its benefits in the female related stuff. I mix her soy shake powder with egg whites skim milk and cocoa powder for a creamy tasty shake.
Take a look at revivalsoy.com. Dr Susan Northrop wrote "The Wisdom of Menopause" and recommends the site. I had tried for years to get my wife into lifting and it was no go. Dr Northrops book suggests weight training and BAM she is now a lifter. Go figure. -------------- Living well is the best revenge. Charlie

Hey Carivan hope Montreal pulled it around and won !
Yep it is pretty cold and lots of snow here , which is okay if you like to ski and snowshoe , I enjoy both. I feel a bit silly I thought the protein shakes and meal replacements were the same thing...I am more concerned getting my protein requirement in the rest of the food is no problem. I realise that prior to making changes my diet was very carb heavy and lacking in protein. lol Charlie we women are a lot like that if someone else tells us well then it must be true ..I guess that is why Dr Phil is such a hit and making millions !!! At risk of sounding really dumb here if I need a mid morning meal ,where i could get good carbs and some fibrous fruit or veggies would it also be okay to have a protein shake at this time mixed with water... thanks again caroline |

The only shake I mix with water is the postworkout. The water won't slow down the absorption. You want the post workout {whey} shake to be sucked up quick. Drink half of it fast and nurse the rest slowly.
Oatmeal is my additive of choice for fibre and carbs. BB1 turned me on to proteincustomizer.com. I buy their hydrozilated whey for post workout and the daytime formula mix which is casin, milk protien and a little whey. It is great with oatmeal and eggwhites. You can jazz shakes up to your needs with natural peanut butter, yogurt, cottage cheeze, bananas and all kinds of things . You need to check the p/c/f of each and chose accordingly. Hope that helps. -------------- Living well is the best revenge. Charlie

The protein shake is only a supplement. If you can't get your protein through real food, well then, go for it. I always leave the house in the morning with 6 hard boiled eggs, that I eat during the day as a snack (throw away the yolks), with a slice of grain bread. Just a suggestion.
But the protein shake won't hurt. The fruit and veggies are a good Idea also. Don't feel silly or dumb for asking a question. No body is born knowing how to live a healthy lifestyle. Not even a "wee" bit. -------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

i'm no expert on supplements, but i would never pay that much for protein. I pay $40(CND) for 5 pounds of prolab protein.
Also, where abouts in Ireland are you from? |

Thanks Carivan every "wee bit " helps !! Thanks to you and Charlie I do understand better. I will give what I bought a try and see how I do , I am sure I will be back with more questions :).
R_Mitty I am from a town called Enniskillen it is in the North of Ireland. Re the protein the town I live in does not have a lot of choice and I am a real novice when it comes to trying to decipher what is out there .Next time I will be a little more knowledgeable and can do a better comparison and hopefully get value for my money. thanks Caroline |
