First of all, Id like to thank everyone for their posts on this board. I am into my second week of the beginners home course and have spent countless hours reading topics on the board. I think every question I had on how to lift properly, nutrition, etc., has been answered somewhere!!!
The one question I did have is, I would like to start purchasing some weights now, so that when Im ready to get into some more advanced weight training programs, I will already have some equipment to use. I cant afford to go out a blow a ton on everything at once so I thought I would start getting things as I need them. I have a set of dumbells which I use in my workouts now, but just wondering what you would suggest next, possibly adding something every month or so. Thanks again for being here for all of us newbies! LOL |

I was paying $30.00 dollars a month for my gym membership, and decided to buy my own weights instead. I did not have a lot of money myself to go out and buy everything at once, so I bought several set of dumbells and an EZ-curl bar with about 60 lbs of weight for that. My next purchase was a Olympic weight bench with 300lbs of Olympic weights, the tree rack for the weights and a floor mat. I already had a health master, Gazzel, and treadmill. My suggestion is look in your local newspaper for people selling weight equipment, you can get awesome deals that way. I paid $250.00 dollars for my Keys Olympic weight bench, Tree Rack, 6X8 floor mat, 300lbs of Olympic weights with Collars, and a neck cusion for squats. Good luck in buying your equipment.

I was in the same boat, $40.00 a month for a gym I felt to embarrased to go to.
Then I started to relized it would be cheaper and more convienient to buy my own stuff. Heres the breakdown. $110 - 300lbs Olymipc Weight set (Weight, Bar, Collars) (Play It Again Sports) $99 - Olympic Bench with Lat Tower, Leg and Preacher Curl (Wal-Mart - Awsome Deal On Sale) $199 - 6.0 HP Treadmill with monitor (Wal-Mart - Great Deal) $50 - Olympic Curl bar and Barbells (Wal-Mart - Works Fine) $50 - Other assorted Crap (Cushions for squats etc etc) Thats just a little over $500 ($508) and I can do full body and cardio without leaving my house :) $40 x 12Months ($480) You do the math! |

If you are truly serious about purchasing your own equipment, don't even bother with those beginner benches and weight sets...you'll eventually outgrow them. Instead, purchase olympic weights, and a good rack with bench (I have the Gold's Gym XR-35 that has a squat rack, lat tower, bottom pulley, separate bench with leg attachment and preacher...cost me about $200).
Good luck! -------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

heh, i buy my equipment from this thrift store... i paid $10.00 for my bench (can be adjusted for incline and has a leg thing for leg extensions/curls)... i bought a bar for $0.25 and each plate (no matter how heavy) only costs me a buck, with no taxes added... so i guess i'm lucky...

I bought most of my stuff from Sears. I got a good deal on my bench and my dumbells. Since I didn't have a lot of money to lay out either, this worked pretty good. I'm always on the lookout for used/cheap equipment.-------------- Happy trails, Mike Young - Still on the pain train |

ioioio it depends....what kind of rutine do you do? how do you feel about switchin weights after each exercise?....you really can never have "too" many weights...they always can be used for something...some people like buyin a bunch of plates and just adjust them for different exercises...others like to buy hex DB's ...its really a preference, doesnt have anyhting to do with your age.

ioioio..., you should probably start out with a couple pairs of dumbbels... when i started out, i bought me this weight kit at walmart (for about 15 bucks) that comes with two handles and fourty pounds of resistence (4 2.5Lb plates, and 4 7.5Lb plates, and the clamps, of course)... That was all I had for a couple months until I finally bought me a bench and the rest of the stuff I have now... I still use that kit I bought from walmart today, so I highly suggest you invest into something like that...
I searched walmart.com but I couldn't find the kit that I bought, so that you could see what I'm talking about, but you could just go to your local sporting stores and see what you can find at your budget level... Anyhoo, good luck to you... |
