New Diet: Eat 2400 Calories. Lose Weight
A new study from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences suggests we can lose weight by eating lots of carbohydrates and little fat--all without cutting calories or exercising. This is not an April Fool's joke. It's a medical study published in the prestigious Archives of Internal Medicine.

The study: Although the three-month study was small--just 34 overweight adults participated--the results were astounding. The volunteers were divided into three groups. One group ate the recommended high-carb, low-fat diet with no exercise, the second group ate the same diet but also exercised regularly, and the third group ate whatever they usually did. Meals were prepared for the participants, who were told they could eat as much as they wanted. Uneaten food was returned so calorie intake could be calculated.

The results: Those who ate the recommended diet but did not cut back on calories and did not exercise lost about 7 pounds. Those who ate the diet but also exercised by riding a stationary bike for 45 minutes a day four times a week lost almost 11 pounds. The control group lost no weight. Foods on the recommended diet include high-fiber cereal, vegetarian chili, whole-wheat spaghetti, many fruits and vegetables, and skim milk. Daily calories total about 2,400.
The skeptics: The study, led by William Evans, has raised some eyebrows. First, doctors have long questioned whether anyone can really lose weight without reducing their food intake and calorie count. Gary Foster, clinical director of the University of Pennsylvania's Weight and Eating Disorders Program, told Reuters he suspects that those who lost weight actually ate less than what was reported. He insists that a low-fat, high-carb diet without calorie reduction would be a "public health disaster." He scoffed, "The whole idea that you could lose weight without reducing energy intake flies in the face of 100 years of data."
