I am female 29, 5ft (a shortie!) I have been trying to lose weight for about 3 weeks now. My starting weight is a hideous 182lbs I am currently 176lbs, which is a loss of 6lbs in 3 weeks. I have been following weight watchers but have cut a lot of crabs out, no bread, potatoes or pasta. I have been going to the gym 3 or 4 times a week using the ski machine for 50 minutes at a medium level of 10. I then do about 20 minutes of weights. I wonder if some could answer a question for me. I want to find out if I should be lifting heavy weights at 12 reps x 3 to build muscle as having muscle will help me burn fat or should I do lighter weights at 30/40 reps x 3? I need to know which method will benefit me the most to lose weight and burn my fat. I would appreciate any advice you have to give, thank you. : )

Drop 50 minutes to 30 for your cardio and add 20 mins to the weights and yes go heavier 30-40 reps will be like a cardio workout, but will not build much in the way of muscle.

Be sure to do a little diet homework. Many people new to this don't realize that eating too little while exercising will take you the opposite direction from where you want to go. Good luck, Welcome to FT.

yes, like Charlie said, make sure that you are eating enough. The one thing that has been pounded into my head by these guys is that if you don't eat enough your metabolism will think you are starving, and save everything you eat as fat. Also, try adding more fruits and veggies to your diet, as the fiber helps digestion and processing of fats as well. Keep up the good work!!

Like mutt said, heavier weights and fewer reps, and longer weight lifting sessions. Try doing 3 sets of 12, 10, 8 reps increasing the weight with each set. Once I started doing it this way I saw a lot more progress than 3 sets of 15 reps. That was getting me nowhere. Just keep upping those weights. And keep a log for your workouts and for your food intake.

Thank you all for your good advice. Actually now that you mention the food, I have been eating much less food than I used to before, I don't feel like I am straving but the foods I am eating are a little bland as I am cutting out dressings etc on salads etc. What percent of my meals should be protiens, crabs or fats do you think? I did a whole body weights workout out last night and today I feel so sore, but am feeling pleased cause that means its working right? Apologises for being so navie about weight training and I have no idea how my message doubled itself, thanks for persevering and reading it through!! This is such as fab site I wish I had stummbled upon it sooner! Thank you all for being so encouraging! : )
