I am in generaly good health. I go to the gym and do my eliptical for 45 min's 4 days a week. On feb 28 I have a dep. Sheriff's fit test. I need to be able to run 1.5 miles in 16:54. Problem is that i can barely run a 1/4 mile. Any advice?

With your level of fitness (doing 4 cardio exercises per week), you should be able to "fast-walk" 1.5 miles in about 25 min. Try jogging that distance (if it becomes too hard, slow down to walking than speed up once you regain your strength, but don't stop). I think you will find that you are just a few minutes short. Do jogging/running for 45 min with 1.5 miles timed for the two weeks left. Try to shorten 30-60 sec. each day, you should be able to pass that test no prob. :)

Hi Pretykym, & welcome! First tip would be that a lot of "barely being able to run 1/4 mile" is probably psychological. Try pushing through that first barrier and see what happens, sometimes it actually gets easier. Second tip would be to jog 2 mins, walk 1, then 3 & 1 and so on. Sooner than you think, you'll be able to go the whole distance. Is the test outside or on a treadmill? You should train for the run in the same environement as the test. Good luck!

The test is around two laps around the Jail. Thank you both so much for your advice.

If you mean 2 laps around the exterior of the jail, try to train outside. For some reason or another, running outside is far different than on a treadmill. I think it has to do with the "bounce" you get off the treadmill.

I think you are right. I can go for at least 15 min on the treadmill..so I thought hey no prob. Attempted a run around my neighboorhood yesterday and was completly ashamed of the fact that i had to keep stopping.

Well, then try what I mentioned outside. 2 mins run, 1 min walk etc... You can do it!
