Hello, I am relatively new to working out in general. I am 30 yrs old and am training for navy boot camp. For two months now I have been jogging/walking 2 miles a day. Do as many push ups and sit ups as I can a day and numorous other cardio type exercizes. I HAVE to lose 5 pound to be in standard to go to boot camp. I have lost 5 inches througout body but have gained 2 pounds.
I understand that I may be building muscle and it is heavier than fat but facts are that I have to lose 5 pounds. I am 5'10" and weigh 181.

I have been on a 1200-1500 calorie a day diet. I have to eat if Im working out. Am i eating too much or too little.

Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how I can lose pounds while working out. I think this is realistic, as far as goals go, so why is it not working after two months. I am getting seriously discouraged.

Please help a newbie. THanks.

I dunno for sure, but that doesn't seem like a lot of calories to me, especially if you are working out. Just to live, your Basal Metabolic Rate, you need about 1600 calories. Here's a site to calculate the BMR

http://www.summithealthcenter.com/fitness/fitnesscalculators.htm

BMR is the calories you need just to live... ie: blink, sleep, sit... the basics.

I'm not sure about the biology of it all, but you may need to increase what you eat and be sure what you are eating is the right stuff.

I checked it out. It says I should eat 1632 calories a day. The problem is I am eating healthy and often. But the things I eat are just not adding up to 1600. What should I be eating to meet this without it being bad for me. I am concentrating on protien and fruits and veggies with some carbs.

Do a search for bbfit1's Grocer's list for bodybuilders. It has a fantastic variety of foods on there...

I just want to dispell a misconception here. That muscle does not way anymore than fat. Lets think about it a pound of feathers compared to a pound of potatoes. Whats the common link? A pound is a pound!!! Muscle has a greater density then fat but does not weigh more. well Good luck - Mike

I went through the same thing when I started on the program. The weight will come of when you reach an equalibreum. Dont get discouraged you might need to create a greater caloric defecit to get the fat to burn off.

Hi, Parko03. If you have to loose that 5lb fast, lay off the strength training for a while. I think because you are gaining muscle, the fat you loose won't show on your overall weight. Doing cardio only you will loose both fat and muscle, but you will loose your 5lbs sooner.

I have until may to make this happen. I have already noticed changes in my strength and stamina. I don't really get sore anymore either so I believe I've reached a new level(I think).

mmaibohm...What do you mean greater caloric deficit? You mean cut my calories more? If I do that, where should I make sure my calories are coming from so to not burn myself out.

I would say to keep protein high, carbs medium, fat low. Look for good qualty carbs and good clean fat sources like nuts. Good Luck - Mike

I don't know how navy regulations are, but in the Army they measure your neck and waist size percentages to equivlate bf% that is if you are above your weight height limit. It is a good idea to cut your caloric intake to lose the fat and gain the muscle. And a mmaibohm was saying, muscle grow's more densly than fat, that means that a greater concentration of muscle cells can from in an area than fat cells meaning that they both weigh the same but more muscle can fit in a smaller area than fat equivlating the gaining of muscle weight over fat weight. It may be a good idea to talk with bb1fit about this, he seems to have a better handle on how to lose the fat and possibly how to hit that weight mark that you want without hindering your muscle growth. My 2 cents.
