Active Recovery? Cardio while healing?

Is it a good idea to do cardio on muscle recovery days?

My problem is that I want to go to the gym almost daily. However, I can't do much on three days of the week because muscles are healing, so usually I don't go. Now, I'm going to change that, and the only question is, "What can I do?"

I would hope that it would not be harmful on muscle recovery days to go play basketball or do an hour or two of cardio (even if you did cardio after your hardcore workout lastnight).

What's popular thought on this?

I do not let my weightlifting prevent me from playing sports. However, I am no expert.

Active recovery has been shown to have many benefits. It can promote recovery from hard-core training sessions. Muscular aches often occur after a hard-core training bout. These pains typically peak 24–48 hours after exercise, and are known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Hasson et al investigated the use light exercise in the treatment of DOMS 24 hour’s post-eccentric quadriceps training. A very significant amount of reduction in symptoms occurred.

Here is the study if you care to look it up...Hasson S, Barnes W, Hunter M and Williams J. Therapeutic effect of high speed voluntary muscle contractions on muscle soreness and muscle performance. Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, 10 499-504. (1989)

One note, the optimal word is light exercise, I would not do another workout per sey. Some basketball could be cool, just don't get hurt.

bbifit I agree with that one. After a tough leg day doing some cardio the next day like brisk walking, really eases the pain.

I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it is gone past me I will turn to see fear's path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain

Thanks bb! Today I did basketball for 2 hours. Lot's of fun; back hurts but oh well...usually does. If my cool watch is accurate, I burned about 1150 calories just playing hoops. Hooya.

I think a lot of us do our cardio/aerobic exercise on the days we dont lift.
