Today I went shopping for some new spring clothes, pants mainly, and upon trying them on, I was shocked to see how wide my hips and upper-outer thighs are!! I never noticed them being like this before and I wanted to cry! A year ago my hips/thighs were not this wide, so since I am 23, could this be a result of my body preparing for pregnancy(which I personally am not planning for a few years) or what is going on?? I have not gained more than 5 lbs since last year, but I think that it is muscle because since doing the FT program, I have toned a lot and am definetely not flabby. So fellow ladies, if you have any experience with this please give me some info and any advice on what to do because I don't want to look like a pear!!Or maybe I have no choice..?:(

Is it fat or muscle?
I have a few friends who joke about starting a clothing line for fit girls, we tend to have more butt development and leg development than the average person. Look for pants with lycra in the denim/fabric so there is some stretch over the hips and thighs. Muscular legs look awesome in shorts and skirts, so don't fret too much. -------------- "To be able to go to the gym and train hard is a joy and a privelege, even though the hard work necessitates driving yourself through considerable discomfort. I can't tell if it's fat or muscle to be honest. I am hoping it's muscle since I've been doing the FT intensive leg/butt program (with some added leg/butt exercises of my own) for over a year, and I also mainly do my cardio on the step-machine so I would think that it's muscle. But I always had some butt/thigh fat (just a little like most women) even when I didn't have wide hips so it makes it difficult to tell wether it's excess fat or not. I doubt it though because working out 4x a week next to a diet usually low in fats shouldnt be allowing me to gain weight...i hope! The clothing line thing sounds real good too!! The clothes I see in stores are either super huge or made for thin,chicken-legged girls.Ahhh!

Uggh I'm with you Diana.. I only weigh 5 pounds more, which I believe is mostly muscle, but my thigh/hip area is definitely getting wider.
I really believe that our body shape does change a bit as we .. umm.. mature.. :( But I am so in for that clothes line!!! |

Did you start a desk job in the last year? Or do you spend more time sitting than you used to? That will do it. You could be right too about your body changing to a more mature shape. I have heard, and I admit it could be an old wives tale, that when a young woman becomes sexually active on a regular basis, her hips do widen some. Which I guess makes sense and also goes along with what you said about your body preparing for childbearing. Like my dear old dad always said......"we don't call 'em 'broads' for nothin".-------------- ~Victoria~ ...Do not be discouraged; everyone who got where he is, started where he was.--anon ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

Well if it's nothing to do with extra fat then a very good advice is to work your shoulders and back so you'll get a more "timeglass" figure......

I am so glad that I'm not alone on this one. Azreadhead, I do sit a lot due to having to sit in classes and to all of the studying I have to do at home(well, around 4-5 hours a day), but I'm in my fourth year at the Univ. so it's nothing new. I HOPE it's not from the sitting anyways. I will take up your advice Philia and will do extra shoulder/back exercises. I truly hope it'll help, but hey, if guys like the curves, then I will try not to stress about it. It's just that it's all new to me and I guess I have to get used to my changing figure. As long as it doesn't jiggle...!!!
