I find that because i am 300 + lbs that when i run my joints hurt(ankles and knees)is riding the bike just as good or is there other machines that i can use. Also how long should it be or go for distance.

easy on those joints!the key to any cardio is keeping you heart rate in the zone. all cardio machines will do the job.focus your workout to achieve 65-85% of your max heart rate. 220-your age is your max heart rate. are you just starting an exercise program? if so, work up slowly to 30-45 min 3x week or more depending on your goals.........good luck

Ouwch! You might want to try an elipticle trainer or sometimes called a crosstrainer. When using the machine, your feet don't leave the surface of the platform, and therefor no shock to the knees.
Another benefit from this machine is that it burns more energy.
And like jwagoner said, watch the heartrate. Be patient and don't over do it!

Agree strongly with Carivan; elliptical with handles (x-trainer) gives the warmup and burn all over, no impact. I love it.
