do you actually have to become winded in order to get a good cardio workout? I mean I can do the exercise bike for maybt 6 or so miles and not be at a loss of breath, or do the elliptical machine for 3 miles, and nothing but a little burning in my legs happens. But if I go out and run for lacrosse or something I can lose my breath in like a half a mile.
Do you guys think instead of doing the bike or elliptcal for 5 miles or whatever it is, I should just go on the treadmil for 1 mile?

If you are winded you are overdoing it. You should know what your max heart rate is and go for 65%-85% of that.
220-your age = your max hr.
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure of all the mechanics, but I would think that with a true cardio workout, uyou will be winded and your heart will be pounding. I would look at the intensity of your workout. I could be totally wrong though - I always shoot for exhaustion when I do cardio.

Winded to me means breathing pretty hard in a fatigued state. That is in no way productive.
