I've noticed that when I do squats using the Smith Machine, the mussle in the arch of my foot will tense up sometimes to the point that I stop doing the squats. Is it likely that I'm doing something wrong that's causing this?

How are you doing them? With the smith machines you need to sort of lean back into them. With free weights you more center yourself under the bar. Good luck - Mike

I'm standing slightly in front of the bar, so that the bar is in line with the back of my neck and resting across my shoulders. Then I’m gripping it from behind on each side. I'm squatting until my legs are horizontal and then back up to the standing position. Another person at the gym suggested standing with my heals resting on a 2x4, toes to the floor -- so the heals are raised up a bit. Is this a better method? It didn't seem to change the cramping in my foot muscle.

You might also need some shoes then with better support. Is the pain more in the arch area?

I would assume that you have high arches, that way, when weight is put on your feet, they try to flatten out, and they have no support, so the muscles and tendons get sretched. I think arch supports might be a good idea. If you want to make sure, you should always see a doctor.
