Looking at numbers or what the food is?

I've been trying to follow a diet plan so that I can get lean, but I was wondering if I should be concerned with the numbers or what the food is. I am on spring break right now and my family doesn't have the best food in the house so I just look at the numbers on the box to see if it fits my plan. To make an extreme example to clarify, lets say i could fit a McDonalds Cheeseburger into my diet plan due to the end of the day numbers adding up to what I want them to be, eg. Calories 2393. Does it matter if I just had a McDonalds Cheeseburger as long as my Fats, Cals, and Carbs don't exceed my predetermined numbers?

A Mcdonalds cheese burger will have about a weeks worth of fat in it. There is a post here called the grocer list for a body builder. Do a search and look it over. The foods listed on it are cheap and easy to find. Hopefully some others here will suggest good fast foods. I prepare my food and bag my lunches. Its pretty cheap and just requires a little work. Hope this helps. Welcome to FT.

I was looking at www.fatcalories.com and a McDonalds Cheeseburger has:

Total Fat:14
Carbs:36
Cal:330

This sorta fits into my meal plan for a day as long as I am careful about fats for the rest of the day.

I have looked over the grocery list, but it doesn't do much for me yet as a college student required to have a meal plan only allowed to have a microwave in the dorm. I was just mainly curious with "Dealing with what you have." I always hear pizza cheeseburgs are the best meals but what if you incorporant them into your diet wisely, making sure the numbers don't add up to high.

What would you eat for the rest of the day??? Thats the problem with fast food in a nutshell. Sorry, for some reason I thought your original Q was about going home on break.

Adding up the macro numbers is better than nothing but you know, garbage in = garbage out.

Again , If you eat 14 grams of fat in the 1 burger what will you eat for the rest of the day?? My weight loss regimine calls for 20 grams of fat. I can't seem to get less than 30. You really need to eat the healthy fats when you eat them. The 900 calories in a big mac don't equal 900 calories from lean meat or fish complex carbs and healthy fats. This healthy eating thing does take work. I miss my junk food too guys but I made the decision to learn how to eat right and stick to it.

You need food from fresh natural sources. If its passed through a window, comes from a box or bag ready to eat it probably isn't worth eating.

Yep I'm with ya Charlie. I used to think I could have the fast food and just take the fat then and not have any for the rest of the day..

Try to figure out how to get another 1500 calories out of protein and carbs only. I've tried. . many times..

What I eventually realized is that by eating that one fatty item, I end up *not getting enough* calories because I'm avoiding fat the rest of the day.

Your body protects what it gets, and voila you aren't losing any weight, you're frustrated and you go for the Big Mac instead of the cheeseburger, hey what the heck this diet thing isn't working anyways!!

(Wow does that sound like the voice of experience or what?):)

Get the calories from better quality sources.
There is protein, (not much), 14 grams of BAD fat, burgers are fried, and the carbs are processed, not to mention the processed cheese slice.. You can fool yourself, that you are getting the numbers in to you, but not good nutrition.
Order the chicken Mcgrill, High protein, less fat, not much carbs if you throw away the bread. I work on the road and they look at me like I'm from outer space when I tell them NO BREAD!
Hope this helps along with the above posts.

I think I see what you guys are getting at. I'm still doing my best to learn how to eat right. So not all fats are created equal...wish the labels would express that haha. I was looking at the new Atkins wraps at Subway and they have 27g of fat....So i take it thats not something you'll try charlie. I think fats are the only thing that I run into trouble with. I do fine with protein, cals, and carbs but its tricky to get the fats where I want them. Thanks for your input guys.

ultra, I can pump the iron.Thats the easy part. The diet stuff whipped my ass for a long time. I don't try to explain how it works. I just got a calorie counter and went to work. Stick around these boards and ask questions. You will get it. Good luck.

Protein -
182 g .. maximum 10% variance is acceptable
Carbohydrates -
424 g .. maximum 10% variance is acceptable
Fats -
84 g .. maximum 10% variance is acceptable
Total Calories -
3025 .. calculated maximum, do not exceed for current goal

Thats mine, as you can see 14fat is nothing :)
I never do achieve my nutrional goals, always about 30-20% short of it, I just cant eat that much. And yea your damm right about the pumping iron being the easy part charlie, it came as a shock to me when I first found out how hard diet is and how important. Thats prolly cos everything out there always spells out to build muscles you need weights, training etc etc, never anything about diet. Just watch rocky, you dont see him having some dramatic background music trying to inspire us all to eat right ;)

 ..that's funny.

I thought finding the time to go to the gym every day was tough..

Now I have to find the time to prepare foods ahead of time, pack it up every day for work, and instead of taking a lunch break, eat 4 times throughout the day..

I get my cardio going back and forth between where the fridges are, the microwaves/sink are, and my desk all day long!
