If I am hungry in the middle of the night, to the point where my stomach is gugling, is this bad? Will my body take food from places like my muscles?
Should I be eating when I am hungry in the middle of the night?

Yes, you are in a catabolic state. If you are trying to gain, feel free to eat. Some casien type protein is best, slow digesting and some healthy fats and fiber. (fiber will help satiate you). If you are trying to lose, then some good fats will suffice here. Try a tbsp. of natural peanut butter. But keep it at that. Chances are also if you are that hungry when you wake, you may not have your diet in order, going to bed too long after eating for instance.

thanks bb1,
i have a protein shake before bed. it is egg protein because the lactose kills my stomach. I bought some flax seed oil (i read in your other posts this helps) but it is nasty. Any good brands you can recommend?

This was also a question that I had. Thanks for addressing it. My average (2 week) daily intake is out of whack, 22%fat, 40%carbs, 37%protein. I'm tweaking my diet to get to 30%fat, 30%carb, 40%protein. I'm on a weight loss track, have worked my up to about 1100 calories per day, so if you have other suggestions, I'd be grateful to hear them.

ok, so i had a half of a shake last night that has some cacein in it at 11:30PM. I took a large flax oil pill with it to slow digestion. I woke up at 7AM starving again. Is this really counterproductive to any muscle growth success I have had?

ssminnow - I wake up hungry - sometimes even nauseous.
Try to have your shake a little while before bedtime.
The only explanation I have ever gotten about waking up with my stomach churning is that eating right before bed starts your digestive system going and it is still going in the morning. That didn't help me much... I get up and take my metabolic formula with 16 oz of water first thing. then 1/2 an hour later i eat my 1st meal. This seems to have reset my stomach's clock. I wish I had a better answer for you, but that is all i know!
I don't think it will affect your muscle geowth THAT much, I would worry more about getting more sleep:)
