I was always under the impression that to burn fat during cardio, you had to be in your target heartrate. That anything above or below your target heartrate you would either not be burning fat or actually breaking down muscle if above. Is this true?
If so, how do higer rate cardio like HIIT and others burn fat? Could someone please clarify for me?

Because doing HIIT you burn an overall higher amount of calories and a percentage of those calories come from fat. So, in a shorter amount of time, you could burn more calories with the same percentage coming from fat as you would at a lower intensity in a longer workout session.
I can find the specific percentages, if you require concrete numbers, i know I have them around here somewhere....

thanks asimmer, i don't need percentages. i had always been told that you have to be in your target hear rate to burn fat. as long as you can burn fat doing hiit, thats all i needed to know.
